An old thread, however ...

Both Multirama and Electroniki in Chania sell Macbooks. They must have service arrangements for these (perhaaps they just send them to Athens?). If you have a Mac it might be worth finding out what they do / who they use.

Hi Kilkis If running old hardware it might perhaps pay to at least try Opera, if you haven't already. The Opera browser has a reputation for being much less of a resource hog than Firefox and certainly in the past has ran noticeably faster than FF (though I believe Firefox 3.5.x is supposed to have ...

No small tavernas or kafes less than 70 sq m are affected by the new law other than if children are permitted to enter then the small establishment has to be 100% non smoking inside (I think). As for pubs in the UK: I think health is more important than pubs. In other countries, pubs have changed to...

Funny you should say that. Greece is in fact supposed to have a relatively low rate of asthma on an international scale and in particular among children in rural areas on Crete (I think only one study though). The theory is supposed to be that village kids eat a lot more fresh fruit, vegetables, oli...

True. The same was the case in other countries once. When I was growing up there were always ashtrays everywhere - not any more. Customs change all the time.

Clio, all of those are good points and I have touched on some, for example the lack of a great deal of health promotion to pave the way for this law. The Health Ministry seem to take a different view - the Minister as reported in the media seems to believe that only a hard hitting and quite sudden c...

Elected politicians do in a democracy. If you don't like the law you have to lobby to get it changed or vote them out. All EU citizens who are resident here can vote in Greece I believe. There's also the weight of international scientific opinion that says this is a good law. If smoking is so good f...

John I am aware of the Cretan suspicion of central government - the same is true in much of Greece. It's not altogether a bad thing, has historical routes in centuries of occupation by invaders I suppose, and it does explain (if not excuse) criticism and resistance to various laws. The more time I s...

Oh I see what you mean. It depends what is meant by "total ban". I would support the eventual adoption of a total ban on smoking in indoors establishments, businesses, shops, tavernas, cafes etc etc. Like the current law but without the loopholes. I think this is the model that Italy has a...

Yes it's not for me to decide though I can complain. However ad hominem attacks are bad netiquette. Strong opinions and argument are not. I have been here in many winters also and have spent long periods in Greece in different places. I can't eat outside anymore at a taverna if there are a lot of sm...

Your post looks like trolling and is against board policy. I am no bigot. I fully support your "right" to smoke and make yourself just as sick as you want to provided that you do not contaminate the air of of others. I have not lowered myself to personal attacks like you, only logical deba...

In my neck of the woods ALL bars have complied with the legislation. That's very good news Retired in Crete, thanks. But where is that? I would be genuinely grateful for a few names of 100% non smoking bars on Crete. or at least a hint in the general direction. All the bars I know in Chania are les...

Good luck with that artiicle Ray when arguing with W.H.O and every other significant public health body. I know who I believe. One thing - the airway in someone with asthma is far more sensitive than a non-asthmatic. Very tiny amounts of irritants such as smoke could cause a fatal attack. Something ...

@paulh: Oh, common - let's just say I take as reasonable the overwhelming weight of scientific opinion by the vast majority of the world's leading public health bodies (also listed on Wikipedia) - they are qualified to evaluate this evidence. Are you qualified to say they are ALL wrong (and all &quo...

Sorry, I only mean to inform (though perhaps a bit stridently), not patronize - I do get passionate and sometimes angry on this issue because it affects my quality of life quite personally, and smokers here can seem extremely dense to me on this (and come bearing unjustifiable arguments about their ...
