Agree totally with Philipos and Carolina. There's nothing useful anyone can say about Brexit at the moment - so let's drop it for a while? Bob.

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

Once, during our early days in Crete, I hoped to impress our elderly neighbour, Georgos, who appeared to be waiting for a lift, by asking him in Greek if he was on the way to the market. I remembered that the word started with "L" and ended in "i" "Kalimera Georgo, sto Leka...

Re: Illegal grazing of Goats in olive trees.Advice please.

I guess the short answer is that if you have animals not belonging to you tethered in your olive grove, you could cut them loose and shove them through the fence and off your land! On the other hand, a diplomatic approach, perhaps via your local TOPIKOS (council rep) might be better. Good luck. In e...

Re: Organ donation in Greece

I think those who had lived in the UK between 1980 and 1996 are the ones who are banned from donating blood. Whatever nationality. Interestingly though, I have had four lots of surgery in Crete since arriving in 1997 and each time was asked to provide a donor. On one occasion an Albanian friend made...

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

Does that explanation also apply to the widespread misuse of subject and object pronouns? My wife and I wouldn't know. No-one has told me!

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

Someone once pointed out to me and others that the most senseless thing in any language is the assignment of a gender to an inanimate object and different languages use different genders for the same article: (cf the feminine 'table' in French and the masculine 'table' in Russian). All rubbish and s...

Re: POST-BREXIT continuing healthcare

Point taken Warwick. As to gold, yes, I too saw the article. But without a chance to 'reconsider' it's all pretty pointless stuff - true thought it may be. Bob.

Re: POST-BREXIT continuing healthcare

The Government has resonded to the recent petition calling for another referendum once the terms of the deal between UK and EU are known. This is a tellng paragraph for anyone who hoped there might be a chance for democracy to have another go: "Both Houses of Parliament will have the opportunit...

Re: Sat Navs

Am usually asked at LGW if I want a satnav in my hire car. Answer along the lines of 'wouldn't know what to do with it - but I do have a map and a good navigator alongside'. Kilikis says not much use in Crete. Echo that. Friends staying in Kalyves wanted our postode to get from there to Kokkino Hori...

Re: Buying a car in Crete

The rental companies can be a good source. A few years ago I dithered for too long and missed out on a very good deal with Auto-Club (also Almyrida & Kalyves). I phoned to confirm yes/no a few days later than promised; Kostas assumed I'd decided against and sold to A. N. Other. Full history, pr...
