Jon, cut down on social workers? My son's a social worker and works roughly 80 hours a week because of manning levels.No overtime paid. Let me give you a recent anectdote. He went to visit the home of a single father of a 10 year old boy who had been missing from school, after 4 visits, fobbed off w...

@topdriller
Jon, you're an intellegent bloke, but in this case you missed the point. When my father beat me I became resentful and agressive towards HIM, if the state starts beating people....
@cashey
Are you for real? You sound like Captain Mainwairing from dad's army.

Similar to my upbringing, however that's not the point. I didn't not commit crimes as a result of being beaten. Sometimes the beatings were, I thought, fair but were more often unfair. They only bred in me a dislike, contempt and agression towards the authority, in my case my father, but in others t...

The people committing those crimes were probably beaten as children, by their parents, and all it taught them was that violence was power and control...ergo...

Do you really think the yobs attacking the police and looting are thinking of socio-economic complexities?! They've got a vote.....or would you prefer anarchy?

This isn't about greed at the highest level, it's about greed at the lowest level. I was born on a council estate into the direst poverty but, like my siblings, was raised to respect the institution of law, and education as a means to better myself.

The reciprocal health-care agreement between Jersey and Britain was re-instated a month ago. This, hopefully, will entitle you to a European health card ( formerly E111 ). Worth reading up on - good luck.

Hi, I don't really think it's enough, unless you live quite frugally. To get a low rent you, quite rightly, think of living 'out of town'. But then, of course, you need a car, which is very expensive to run in Greece. You have to think of health too; not everything is free here - you have to pay a p...

@Jeffstclair Love the idea that pulses in a sack on the floor must be grown locally...yeah. You're quite right, of course, that everyone on Crete should have a neighbour who kills the odd pig and offers you a leg - and there are some people that have been spotted buying eggs in shops. Have they no s...

@ Jeffstclair Top quality fruit, veg, meat and pulses - you're having a laugh!! The fruit and veg are sprayed with so many organophosphates that most other countries refuse to accept our exports - the EU picks up the tab. The meat reared here is full of antibiotics and growth hormones - check out Cr...

Some very amusing posts. I still think that if a B&Q, Tesco, Matalan, Primark, Toys'r'us, Pc World and Ann Summers opened just off the national highway, the queues would be long. Maybe I'm pushing it with Ann Summers.

A lack of a B&Q makes Crete better than the U.K.? Barking.
Have you considered a mud hut in Mali for your next move?

I have broken into two New Century homes in Kalyves. One took 60 seconds, the other about 90. I should add that this was done at the request of friends who had locked themselves out. It's sad that it's come to this, but people have to spend more on beefing up security. My sympathies to the original ...

Jon,
Perhaps one of the owners will have an Adam Smith moment and realise he could make more money if he reduced the price.......but then Smith wasn't Cretan.
