Re: Road Tax

As I'm with the local small bank about once a week I just ask the guys there to pay my car tax. They make a note and do it later when they have time. No fee, no hassle, no queuing.

Re: Planning permission for boundary repairs?

We have built boundary walls. Our understanding was (probably doesn't apply now) that walls entirely within your boundary, and on a road aminimum of 1.5m from the white line, can be built up to 1m high. Ours are about 60 cm. Whether we needed planning permission is a moot point as we didnt even ask....

Re: Block on renewal of IKA books due to BREXIT

As to refusing renewal, in previous years I have tried to renew as early as December (a mistake) and even in January, only to be refused on the grounds that I was too early. My local KEP does not accept IKA books until early February. My understanding of the mutual agreement between Greece and the U...

Re: EHIC card

If you are a UK national the EHIC is issued by the UK. If resident in Greece and registered with IKA, it can be used in Europe excluding the UK. If resident in the UK and registered with the NHS, then it can be used in any European country except the UK. What I haven't seen above is that you can hav...

Re: EHIC card

If you are living here and signed up for IKA (which means relinquishing NHS cover in the UK) then you need an EHIC card when travelling there. If still with the NHS you need one to access IKA, though private care for minor problems can be remarkably cheap. My understanding is that if you have not ye...

Re: Draining the pool over winter or keep it going?

It seems to me both views are valid with two caveats. The advice I have is that any pool is more proof against earthquake if full rather than empty. The second id that an empty pool, no matter how much shock and stuff you add to it, can be seriously disgusting by the spring. Becauuse I live here per...

Money Moving Post Brexit

Like a lot of people who have moved here from the UK, we have pensions paid directly to us in Greece by our pension agency. Saw our accountant the other day and he told us that some were stopping direct payments from the UK and instead, transferring the money themselves from a UK account. He said th...

Re: IKA Renewal Heads Up

Went to our local KEP (Kalives) and asked about this. No problem. Books, photocopy of passports taken on the spot, dilosi came ready filled in from her computer!!! Ten days later she called us and we collected our books. No problem.

Re: Paying for Renovations

If you are living here, and have an income stream from another country coming to a bank here, I'm given to understand that, depending on the annual amount you bring to Greece, certified by your bank's pink slips, you can withdraw an amount of cash significantly larger than is allowed normally. I did...

Alternative Electricity Supplier

I've been approached by a company called "KEN" offering to supply me with electricity about 25% cheaper than ΔΕΗ. Checked their website and all seems above board. Have any other members of this forum been approached or even switched? Any information would be appreciated.

Also, as a matter of interest, this KTEL website is searchable and details all aspects of the route you choose and gives you a fare. You can even buy and print out your tickets!! https://www.ktelherlas.gr/en/routes-9

Express Bus Service

I'm looking for a reasonably fast and convenient way for a friend to travel by bus from Agios Nikolaos in Lasithi, to Kalives in Apokorona. I find the transport web sites a bit confusing. Do any of the good people of this forum have any advice on this matter they are willing to share. (Apart from &q...

Re: E1 tax submission - prove you're married??

I agree. And, for the record, my wife and I sold up in the UK eleven years ago and built a house here to live in permanently. Our accountant insists that under current agreements we can be "tax resident" in the UK unde the clause cited by Warwick above. Moreover almost all of our income is...
