New inmate at sanctuary

It has been a very tough winter at the sanctuary, as most inmates are getting old and more fragile. And while we will always remember them it is great to welcome new arrivals. The latest, Orophelia is a new experience for us. She is a traditional Cretan Pony, which means that instead of the normal g...

Visit the donkeys, horses and mules

They all have their winter coats on and will welcome visitors to the sanctuary. Linus is our latest arrival who arrived in very poor condition from Moires, which we discovered has an animal welfare officer who asked that we take in and care for this lovely, friendly mule. For those who don’t know we...

Re: Apothiki construction: tax??

As ever there are so many potential solutions and much probably depends on location. On our sanctuary we now have 7 stables made with lamarina or wood, as well as a caravan which we now live in, to which we added a lamarina roof and Tentes sides. But years ago we had police problems when we were acc...

Re: Start of the fire season already

And needless to say - driving down to Ierapetra, passing fire tenders still on watch - there is somebody with a big fire up in the fields - no doubt because he was going to burn today.. Needless to say it is still very windy, but as I stopped to speak to the firemen, he would receive an earful. Alis...

Start of the fire season already

It is only April and the fire season has started already. This one started close to the main road, just down from our house in Anatolh and has caused a great deal of damage despite the best efforts of the fire services assisted by many, many local people. The costs will only emerge later - hopefully...

At least if it is a small goat problem the fence does not need to be very high - it is also called perifraxi. Alistair

Re: Tooway Satellite Internet problems?

Hello Yes having the same and have only just renewed although OTE have recently said that in our remote village we may be able to have Internet from them.... I was interested to read on another thread that many people use an assumed name on the forum - what possible reason could there be for doing t...

Re: Winter Fuel Allowance

On this subject we woke up this morning to more snow storms, frozen water pipes, frozen toilet and we don't have central heating, so the argument about whether the payment can be justified in our case is easy. Could not get car, - a 4x4 on to the road so walking everywhere to feed animals - and peop...

Re: Holiday in Crete

We see many tourists doing this route through the villages but few take the chance to stop and explore, Just below Anatoli you can always stop off to see the Walk with Donkeys Sanctuary where we care for rescued donkeys, horses and just the one mule. Inevitably we also have a number of dogs which th...

Re: Snow

While we have electricity - we are 500 metres high with deep snow - as is its habit the small 4x4 is in dock so we have a rental Fiat, which is impossible. We are having to walk to the donkeys and horses which is 2 kilometres one way and a kilometre to the other lot - but it is winter. The snow plou...

Re: knee problem with dog

We are near Ierapetra and have a number of rescue dogs. It often happens that we take a dog to one vet who 'has a go' but end up taking them to another. This happened yesterday, one dog had been holding one leg up when walking or running, the diagnosis was that nothing was wrong. Another vet found l...

Re: Guardian Article

I saw this thread this am early and waited until later assuming that someone would correct the glaring error.

Am I correct in saying that many other nations were part of this World War and not only England and the English.

600+ refugees land in Ierapetra

For those not in the West a bit of news from this side of the island that a boat arrived with 600 and more refugees in Ierapetra. The emergency services and people of Ierapetra dealt with the situation in a totally professional manner, rallying round to ensure that all were brought to safety and tre...
