Re: Earthquake

I also felt it this time. More like a single bump rather than a multi-second shaking. The more the merrier I say. You can't live close to a fault line, as we do, and expect never to experience quakes. Each small quake releases stress that might otherwise build up and cause a bigger one.

Re: Now TV

I must admit I have never tried so I am not certain but, as far as I know, you can install Smart DNS on the various sticks, which should fool the IP Address blocking used by BBC, ITV etc, but not an actual VPN, even through a side door. I could be wrong.

Re: Rats!

I and several of my friends have had problems with rats getting into cars. They seem to prefer new cars to old ones and love to chew the insulation around the cables, chewing through the cable at the same time. It can prove very expensive if they need to fit a whole new loom. I had the soundproof ma...

Re: TOEB Water Cut

Typically in winter our agricultural water is only on one day per week and that's not guaranteed. My domestic water typically cost me around €6 per quarter so I cannot see any reason not to have it unless it is simply not available? Even if the nearest source is some distance away the pipework is no...

Re: Moped Tax

This link still works for me. I used it recently to print out several circulation tax forms for myself and some friends for 2020. Warwick PS I mostly use Firefox but after posting the above I used Google Chrome, which I have set to translate from Greek to English, and started with gsis.gr . I then ...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

... It infuriates me when I hear the Conservative Party state they are putting 50,000 more nurses back in to the system... This claim is a classic example of my comment that "You cannot rely on the normal meaning of words any more." This Sky News page has a recording of Johnson making the...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

There are some quite interesting numbers on this Wikipedia entry . I think there are also other hidden costs not listed in the article. For example a significant number of nurses have left the NHS and are employed by private companies who provide contract nurses to the NHS. The nurse typically gets ...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

You are correct, Guy, that nobody is talking of selling the NHS as a business. Saying "the NHS is not on the table" is meaningless. Basically you need to deconstruct every single sentence letter by letter to have any idea what people are really saying. You cannot rely on the normal meaning...

Re: Property purchase costs involved ?

...When I bought my house in 2008, I agreed the purchase price with the estate agent and made one single payment in that amount. I'm 99% sure I made no extra payments for anything after that... I had the same experience when I bought my land, Tim. I made a single payment to the agent and he used th...

Re: Property purchase costs involved ?

I think the transfer of ownership tax still applies and is paid by the buyer. That used to be getting on for 10 % of the price depending on the location of the house, i.e. within a fire district or outside it. I'm not sure if that has been reduced. The buyer also pays the Notary's fee, their own law...

Re: Boost water pressure in shower

There are pumped shower fittings that can be installed. UK versions are designed to be fed from a header tank so I am not sure if they would work on the Greek water system where the water is fed directly to the taps from the mains. They are designed to be plumbed in so you would need to get a plumbe...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

For reasons that are unclear our local greengrocer sells sprouts every Xmas (we're in The Peloponnese, mind) even though there are not many non-Greeks in permanent residence around here... Although I live in the Chania prefecture I am not close to the main centre of UK ex-pats, i.e. Apokoronas. I t...

I always maintain that people should be able to do whatever they want in the privacy of their own homes but I wouldn't mention it if you ever have to have a psychiatric evaluation, Jeff.

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

You're right Jeff. I'm no gardener but a friend who is couldn't get them to grow here successfully either. I think they need some frost. I must admit he had no problem growing carrots. I understand that one trick is to grow them in a container at least 1 m off the floor. Apparently that stops them b...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Surely if you serve any vegetables you put a knob of butter and a sprig of parsley on top just before serving? I must admit I've never noticed if my cook puts it on before she sends the dishes up from the kitchen or if my butler does it at the servery before bringing the dishes to the table. I must ...
