Re: Driving

The advice my father gave me when I passed my test, over 50 years ago, was: 1 "You have just been given a licence to kill, don't use it" and 2 "When driving, assume that every other driver on the road is trying to kill you". I think it is still good advice today.

Re: Driving

The main thing, Bob, is that signposts trump any general rules wherever you are driving in the world. In the three cases you mention I think it is signposted who has to stop/give way. Problems occur when there are no signposts and the general rule takes over if you don't know what the general rule i...

Re: Driving

...There are many differences to the UK, in particular, if on a roundabout with no approach signs (Stop/Giveway) priority is given to those approaching the roundabout... This is just a particular incidence of the more general give way to the right rule, which, I think, applies across most of Europe...

Re: Funerals

I had to go through this in 2012. As far as I can remember the costs were approximately: 1 Funeral Director €1,300. That included the coffin, taking the remains from the hospital to the mortuary, bringing the coffin to the cemetery, placing in the grave and providing the traditional Metaxa, peanuts,...

Re: Driving

I agree with Maud that driving here in a RHD car is more difficult, especially overtaking. I did it for six months and it was OK but I can't say that I enjoyed it and, having worked in the motor industry, I am used to simply getting in any car, driving it and worrying about where controls are when I...

Re: Could this be true?

I am aware that what happens, Clio, isn't always in accordance with what the rules say. I know of another case where the deceased had "apparently" only written an English Will and the lawyer acting for the surviving spouse asked if she was absolutely sure that he had not also written a Gre...

Re: Driving

Sorry I don't know any driving instructors but it is no different from driving in the UK. Press pedals, wiggle stick, turn wheel. Instead of constantly repeating to yourself, "Left hand side - middle pedal brake". as you would normally do as a matter of course in the UK, simply change it t...

Re: Could this be true?

If you are married, jointly own a property, have not made a will and one of you dies, the Greek law says that the survivor inherits half of the property. The other half is divided between any children of the marriage... According to Europa.eu it is a bit more complicated than that. This site gives ...

Re: Could this be true?

There is nothing to stop you submitting a UK Will to the Greek probate court but it is not what they are used to seeing so processing it may take longer and it might raise questions. For example one section of my UK Will contained the following wording, where the red bits contained actual names: I G...

Re: UK Food in Supermarkets

Also, in my experience, Greek supermarkets are not brilliant at stock control. Wait until something sells out, when you have a bit of spare time order some more and when it arrives put it on the shelf if you have the time. Preferably wait until the busiest time of day on the busiest day in the week ...

Re: Could this be true?

As far as I can tell inheritance taxes have to be paid within a certain timescale both in the UK and in Greece. I don't know exactly what that timescale is in Greece. In the UK it is by the end of the 6 month after the person died. In both countries interest is charged if it is not paid on time. In ...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Certainly there are many who believe that the Fed in the USA releases highly confidential information on interest rate changes to big currency traders so they can front run the dollar exchange rate when the announcement is made. They use algorithmic trading to place trades literally nano-seconds bef...

Re: UK Food in Supermarkets

Whats A/B and are there any in the Chania area, pref Vamos? AB is one of the bigger supermarkets. There are two in the Chania area but not near Vamos. Probably the easiest one for you would be off the Souda Road. If you come off the National Highway at the main Souda Junction, go down to the Souda ...

Re: UK Food in Supermarkets

... i always miss indian food when i am out here!... Namaste on the Kissamos road into Chania isn't bad. At least you can choose how hot you want it: European 1 to 5, Indian 1 to 5. Indian 1 would be just above European 5. As you come into Chania from the Kissamos direction it is on the left hand s...
