Re: Museum Fire

There is a short video at the bottom of this ekathimerini article showing the outbreak of the Mati fire. The rate of spread is terrifying.

Re: Storm Clouds.

There is a report in the Telegraph today that, based on a leaked document, the government are planning to unilaterally grant permanent residence status to EU national living in the UK in the event of a no-deal Brexit. See Telegraph article , which has limited access. There is a fuller discussion in ...

Re: Annual house taxes in Crete

I agree, 4 times more expensive does seem high. The UK doesn't have a central government property tax at all but the local council tax, even in the cheapest area in the UK, would be more than double my combined Greek property and council tax. Also my water bill for the year in Crete is under €30 whi...

Re: New Referal System in EOPPY

Out in the villages there used to be OGA doctors, Andrew, but IKA patients could also use them. Typically they cover more than one village so they are only in any particular village one day per week, or possibly two for a large village. I presume they also come under EOPPY now. Based on Stavros' pos...

Re: Annual house taxes in Crete

My house is 110 sqm without a pool and the property tax, ENFIA, last year was €400. On top of that my council tax, paid through the electricity bill was about €200. It does depend where you live. The two major factors affecting both property tax and council tax are the size of the property and where...

Re: Transporting my Dog back to the uk!

Any vet should be able to do all the necessary medical checks, injections and paperwork for you but some are more experienced than others so less likely to make mistakes with the documentation. Any errors and you can find yourself turned back at a port. A friend driving back with some dogs got as fa...

Things aren't always what they seem

There is a fascinating article in ekathimerini . The main article is not that interesting, since I guess few, if any, people on here try to scam the tax office by claiming fake donations to charities or political parties. What is interesting is the very last paragraph. Why doesn't the link between I...

Re: New Referal System in EOPPY

Thanks Stavros. If we are all already allocated to an EOPPY doctor based on our AMKA number how do we find out who that doctor is? I was allocated a doctor when I first got my IKA book. The doctor's name, address and telephone number used to be on the slip that was attached to my IKA book every year...

Re: Anyone have any experience with Protergia for power instead of DEH

An article in ekathimerini provides some advice from the Energy Regulatory Authority on evaluating if a change is worthwhile. Rather general but it might be useful to somebody.

Re: New Referal System in EOPPY

Thanks for the information, Carol. I normally pay to see a specialist privately and even pay a private pathologos for my IKA prescriptions. It's only €20 for three months and I would rather pay €7 per month than wait for hours in the village doctor's waiting room. Could you try to find one extra pie...

Re: Visiting the IKA office in Hania

It's pretty simple although there will inevitably be a queue. If you stand on the Souda road looking at the IKA compound the buildings are in the shape of a square U and you are stood in the open end of the U. The building you want is the leg of the U on your right. Go through the right hand gate, w...

Re: Piraeus Bank ATM Withdrawal Charge

I think it's a decision by the Greek banks to levy a charge on foreign cards so it doesn't really matter what sort of card they are. Effectively they are charging you for using their ATM. I could be wrong.

Re: Water Shortage

From a practical point of view a bowser would work for filling a pool from scratch, when you need a large quantity of water all at once, but it doesn't really work for topping up the pool, when you need a small amount of water on a regular basis, unless you have a really massive storage tank. More i...
