Re: Predictions for 2019 include a Hard Brexit

But that's all fake news, Phil. No company is going to relocate any of its business from the UK. They will all be too busy expanding to meet the demands from new markets after the UK exits the EU and can do free trade deals with other countries. The UK's massive manufacturing sector will be able to ...

Re: bank account after brexit

...Premium Bonds - now there's a thought; and they are tax free! And you can buy them with a foreign address!! Bob. Premium Bond winnings are tax free if you are tax resident in the UK but not if you are tax resident in Greece. I declare any winnings on my Premium Bond holdings to the Greek tax aut...

Re: bank account after brexit

I've just given this topic some more thought and I had forgotten one important fact which makes my previous post inaccurate. In 2014 the EU issued Directive 2014/92/EU that forced each EU country to offer some form of bank account to residents of other EU countries. The requirements of the Directive...

Re: bank account after brexit

I am not sure if Brexit will have much of an effect but it could. One of the known-unknowns. The biggest causes of change in what you can and can't do are changes in the banking regulations. If you look at the terms and conditions of every UK bank I think you will find that they state that they are ...

Re: Predictions for 2019 include a Hard Brexit

Purely out of curiosity do you also have a link to any EU document(s) that say that the EU is also seeking to negotiate a "broader agreement" that will include free access to the EU by the UK service sector, including financial services, that is equivalent to the access they have under pas...

Re: Predictions for 2019 include a Hard Brexit

I don't think you can conflate "lazy reporting" with "a source not wishing to be attributed". All journalists try to cultivate sources in a wide range of organisations that they regard as significant. Sometimes those sources are willing to comment on record sometimes off record. ...

Re: Predictions for 2019 include a Hard Brexit

A large part of the financial service industries' business is done with the EU, Scooby. For example, in the case of J P Morgan it looks like about one third of their UK business is actually done with the EU. In the event of a no-deal or a deal that does not include passporting for financial services...

Re: Residency permits and BREXIT

...In which case it MAY be prudent to obtain a residency permit before the 29th March... Totally agree Voni. Similar advice has been offered by many members of this forum in previous threads. It is worth noting that the statements quoted in your post relate to the December protocol and will only de...

Re: Predictions for 2019 include a Hard Brexit

They and the other banks are doing what you would expect them to do. If they lose passporting rights to deal inside the EU from the UK, which seems the most probable outcome whatever the final deal is other than remaining in the EU, then they have to move their EU business to an EU country. The amou...

Re: Predictions for 2019 include a Hard Brexit

Sorry, Jeff, but I have to disagree with you there. Not adopting the Euro and not being in Schengen does not make the UK "only half in the EU". The UK pays its full share of the budget, is one of the biggest net contributors, has adopted every EU law and mostly enforces them quite rigorous...

Re: Predictions for 2019 include a Hard Brexit

I'm not sure I understand that comment, Jeff. We are currently a full member of the EU so we can't "move from being half in". How you describe where we end up will depend on what the details of the final deal are and your viewpoint. Brino seems to be the current popular epithet.

Re: Sticky topping on yoghurt

It's quite possible that what I described as lemon was in fact bergamot, P&B, or possibly even grapefruit. Once it is preserved in a heavy syrup I find it difficult to distinguish. I just remembered that I have also had rose syrup. I think that typically the taverna owner will have made it thems...

Re: UPS (Amazon UK) office Chania

The map shows it as in the middle of the junction , which it obviously isn't. If you drive up Σοφοκλή Βενιζέλου from that junction going away from Chania towards DEI it is the first building on the left. The picture of the office on your reference is correct. There are new traffic lights at that jun...

Re: Predictions for 2019 include a Hard Brexit

Will anything? More MPs are remainers and they might vote for such an arrangement if the only alternative is a no-deal. SNP and Liberals want to stay in the customs union and the single market so presumably they would be inclined to vote for it. Labour want something like the customs union and the s...
