Re: noise

Many years ago in the UK the people in the house adjoining my mother's, who was in her 80s, installed a heavy industrial sewing machine for sewing leather. Family members took it in turns to use it 24 hour per day 7 days per week making various leather goods. The noise drove my mother mad. She compl...

Re: online bill pay

It is possible to set up a direct debit mandate so that an organisation can bill the bank account directly. It will certainly work for electricity and phone bills. It might work with the water bill but there are a number of water companies in Crete and not all of them operate electronic payments so ...

Re: Water Problem

In the Chania area it doesn't help that they cannot fill the newly built reservoir at Vatolakos because the damn is faulty, leaks and might breach if they filled it. It was designed, I use the term loosely, to be filled from the river at Meskla and to supply Chania and the hotels on the coast to the...

Re: foreigners living permanent in Crete

I don't have specific figures for Crete. The last Greek census was carried out in 2011. According to that the total population of Greece was 10,815,197 of which 911,929 were permanent foreign residents, i.e. about 8.5 %. Of those 199,101 were citizens of other European countries, i.e. about 2 %. Of ...

Re: Dentists in Chania/Apokoronas

Stylianos Kartakis in Alikianos to the south west of Chania has a good reputation but I don't know if he does implants. You could phone and ask. He speaks perfect English. I would mention that in your original post the two phrases: "various periods ranging from two to four weeks" and &quo...

Re: Ryan Air Flights

...I've never been on a flight that took longer than 30 minutes... Who were you flying with, SpaceX? All Aegean flights from Heraklion to Athens are scheduled at 50 minutes. Ryanair always claim that they have the best punctuality record. I cannot imagine that they would schedule the flights for lo...

Re: Driving

A slightly out of date article in Drive Europe suggests that Priority from the Right is widespread in Europe: Priority from the Right applies in France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, Croatia, etc, etc. The only countries we are – fairly – confident it definitely doe...

Re: Parcelforce to Crete

All mail to Crete via ELTA now arrives in Heraklion first for further distribution. There used to be direct shipment from Athens to Chania but that stopped some time ago. Typically going via Heraklion adds 1 day compared to when it used to go directly to Chania. I think that is because it goes from ...

Re: Parcelforce to Crete

I've had exactly the opposite experience. It has taken several days, usually well over a week, for SCS to get the package across Europe to Athens, with very few updates on their tracking site, and then two days to get from Athens to me, unless it arrives in Athens just before a weekend. Warwick PS I...

Re: Parcelforce to Crete

If the label has your Greek mobile number on it the ACS office that services your area should contact you to arrange delivery or pick up.

Re: Parcelforce to Crete

It depends how they are sent. If they are sent "Tracked" then Parcelforce usually hands them over to SCS, a European courier service, and from SCS to ACS in Greece, a local Greek courier service. If you put the Parcelforce tracking number into the SCS web site it should give you an SCS tra...

Re: Greek Driving Licence

A few of comments: 1 You could have done everything at KEP without going to the licensing office. Once you reach 80 you have to go to the licensing office. 2 You may find it takes more than one month. I've known it take 8 weeks. I believe there is one person in Athens who issues all licences for Gre...

Re: Driving

Thanks for the details. I am guessing that that is the fee for a Norwegian licence? I think the exact fee will vary depending in which country the licence is issued and exactly who you apply to for the IDP. In the UK for example the Post Office quote for applying in a branch: 1 Your full UK driving ...

Re: UK v Greek Driving Licence

There are often derogations for individual countries in EU Directives and that can make them confusing. Often the Commission gets almost complete agreement on a Directive but some member states disagree on a specific issue. To get round the impasse the Directive will typically give an overall requir...
