Satellite TV

After years of good service my satellite box gave up the ghost so bought new one (Commander 9000HD). Decided to try to set it up myself. I've tried auto scans and blind scans on various satellites, but no luck - no channels at all. Strangely no matter what satellite I choose the signal strength is 3...

Re: German response to today's request from Greece.

It seems most unrealistic that any democratic developed economy can consistently over many years run a surplus of near 7% - maybe just a couple of years. So growing out of the deficit is not very realistic. I am sure the Germans and the rest know this. I also imagine they recognise that much of the ...

Re: The Plan

Best of luck to Syriza in stamping out tax evasion and corruption. I hope they focus on all levels of society as it seem endemic throughout. A new culture is required. The biggest test will come in abolishing privileges. For example, legislation protecting various employment groups and businesses ag...

The Perfect Bailout

From Ian Cowie's column in the Sunday Times Money section. There's a village in Greece where everyone is in debt. One day a German tourist walks into the local hotel and puts a €100 note on the desk, saying he wants to inspect the rooms before deciding whether to stay. The owner gives him some keys ...

Fixing washing machines

We have a Morris washing machine. Following the recent thunder storm the machine can't be left plugged in without the electrics in the whole house tripping out. In the UK the sensible thing is normally to get a new machine. What about Crete? Are there people around who fix these things at a reasonab...

Apologies if this has already been asked. We got our original tax demands earlier on and the updated ones recently issued. There was no difference. I am always interested to know how my tax is calculated, but from the information on the tax demands I cannot work it out. Does anyone know how it is ca...

I seem to remember Soros made a cool £1 billion just speculating against the pound. Should we be taking his views seriously? Maybe there is some guilt from the past and now a "reformed" character. Or maybe he invested in some banks shares, got burnt and now hates the banks.

Yes, its dreadful that the Greeks almost exclusively prescribed branded drugs. The cost cannot be justified. Nowadays, however, things are changing and generics are a greater proportion. As regards the luxury tax, if that and whatever else is targeted at paying the interest is insufficient then the ...

Most employers I have come across both in the UK and abroad provide free coffee and tea. Seems a petty point to me.

I think we all know that the level of challenge from the Greek tax authorities is unlikely to be other than weak. So, no doubt this individual is likely to continue to avoid the luxury tax on his yacht for some time to come. It does not alter the reality (based on what has been said in this thread) ...

I am afraid paying for education and training is the way of the world nowadays. Look what undergraduates in the UK have to pay for their degree courses. They have to pay for their accommodation and course; and if they fail they don't get the money back! Nevertheless, I don't like the idea one bit. S...
