Re: The Will of the People

Good launch by the new brexit Party today. The Tories and Labour better not underestimate them, no wonder May doesn’t want the European elections to happen. Nigel has hit the ground running. You can see on you tube the speeches in full, I can see them gathering pace very quickly. I think the Europe...

Yes, you're quite right of course. I don't know why I persist with lunchtime drinking - it clearly doesn't agree with me ....

I wouldn't hold your breath though. Unless of course you don't like second-hand cigarette smoke - in which case do hold your breath. :(

Re: The Will of the People

An absolutely spot on analysis. HMG have have played a weak hand very badly from day one, which includes electing a Remainer as PM. The whole thing has been an abysmal mess of poor planning, negotiation and factionalized party politics. We should hold a General Election with the proviso that none of...

Re: The Will of the People

I would be in favour of a second referendum. It seems eminently sensible to me that the electorate should be able to choose which of the Leave options the country should adopt. Obviously Remain would not be on the ballot, as this question has already been settled by means of a national plebiscite. ...

Re: The Will of the People

Clearly leave voters think it has moved towards remain, which is why they don't want a second petition. Claims that having a second referendum would be democratic/undemocratic are simply narratives to try to gain support for what they want. Warwick I would be in favour of a second referendum. It se...

Parliament has not forbidden a no-deal. It has indicated that it is not in favour of a no-deal.

That's what the word 'extension' means. Surely?

Re: The Will of the People

I think, but don't know for certain, that they will only grant a short extension to allow for implementation of the existing proposed Withdrawal Agreement in UK law if May can get it through Parliament. If Bercow will not allow a third vote I am not sure how that can happen. It was suggested this m...

Re: The Will of the People

I don't understand the ins and outs of it, but my understanding is that because the final amendment was pulled, it's now within the gift of The Speaker as to whether the 3rd Meaningful Vote can be tabled. Of course Mr Bercow is supposed to be neutral ..... supposed to be ....

Re: The Will of the People

I still think TM could get her deal through at the 3rd (or 4th!) attempt but it would probably take a combination of: a) The Attorney General 're-interpreting' his legal advice on getting out of the backstop b) The EU refusing a short extension and threatening the UK with a (say) two year delay c) T...

It depends whether you're ex-pat or sub-183 days per year - the deadlines are different for each.

Re: The Will of the People

I may be using the wrong terminology but, as I understand it, 'no deal' although being a default as you say, cannot be changed without a change in the law which I assume will take a certain amount of time.
