Re: New Airport at Kastelli

Interesting that the "impression of Kastelli Airport" in the link shows what appears to be deep blue sea just the other side of the runway. Have they got confused with the existing Heraklion airport perhaps? A bit naughty really, seeing as Kastelli is several kilometres inland.

Re: Crete Documentary

I thought it was a bit disappointing and an opportunity missed. Apart from anything else, it fell victim to the current vogue for lots of walking pieces to camera by the presenter, when we just want to see the scenery. The second episode, on Corfu, followed the same basic pattern and once again used...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Thank you Warwick. As usual you have articulated far better than I did, the point I was making on the previous page. I would only add that I think Johnson has made a tactical mistake by rejecting Sturgeon's demand so soon after the election. If Brexit is NOT badly negative -- to borrow your phrase -...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

With reference to what Keltz wrote above, I would not bet the farm on Sturgeon's IndyRef2 being a success for her .. even if Johnson had not already blocked it. Yes, the SNP has the largest number of seats under First Past the Post, but most Scottish seats are far more marginal than those in England...

Re: Earthquake

I think that might be a little fanciful, as there have been two other earthquakes -- one north of Sitia and another out beyond Rhodes -- in the same period, and there's no oil drilling going on there. There have been numerous tremors all around the "Hellenic Arc" recently so I would imagin...

Re: Rats!

Mothballs certainly do the trick, as Warwick says, if you can put up with the smell, although we only get the occasional waft to remind us they are there. Halkiadakis supermarket sells them in packs, with the mothballs in plastic tubes with holes in them to let the odour out, but sealed so that you ...

Re: Earthquake

Ironic that you should ask that question, because I have just had a house insurance application to a Greek company turned down because of the age of the property (about 80 years.) So I will stick with the UK-based company which does include earthquake cover, albeit at a higher price and a fairly hef...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Reluctant though I am to disagree with my friend Tim, there is nothing undemocratic about the Lib Dem policy, as it represents a return to the fundamental principle of Parliamentary democracy -- that no parliament can bind its successor. After this general election we will have had two since the ref...

The car tax rate for 2020 seems to be the same as last year, moggieman.

No, that's good Jeff. It means you have a strong sense of social justice and are extremely liberal in outlook. Live and let live. You're not, by any chance, an ageing hippie? That would fit!

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

I have just done your Political Compass test, Warwick, and find myself in the quarter marked Libertarian Left -- in almost the exact spot occupied by Mahatma Gandhi... Excuse me if I feel a bit smug and quite surprised.

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Totally agree with Warwick, Keltz and SueA. What started as a reasonable discussion thread has degenerated into a lot of juvenile point-scoring that has been hijacked by headbangers and effectively shut out the vast majority of forum members. It's very tedious and very boring.

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Well I knew Rod personally in a previous life, Jeff, and he was certainly never averse to winding people up -- and he still does it very well -- but it makes me smile when he talks about "the establishment" because, of course, he was at the very epicentre of "the establishment" w...
