Re: Damaged telephone socket after electric storm

If that had happened to me I would assume that Cosmote would come and fix it. You don't say where you are on the island, but assuming you are close to a Cosmote office I suggest you get down there tomorrow and explain what happened, and chances are they'll come out and fit you a new socket. They are...

Re: Ryanair

Hi Tim, we have done the Sitia/Athens/Heathrow leg several times with Aegean/Olympic and, as altohb says, the connection time at Athens is tight, but we have never missed one yet! If your inbound from Sitia lands within one hour of your Heathrow departure, a flight "ambassador" will be at ...

Re: Apothiki construction: tax??

After the work on our house had finished and the kitchen fitter had left, I switched on the electric oven but nothing happened. Checked the fuses. All OK. Called the man back. He checked the fuses. All OK. "Ah," he said, "I remember now ..." as he pulled the oven out from the wor...

Re: Scrap Dealer near Sitia?

Not sure if the guy actually deals in scrap cars, but his yard usually contains accident wrecks, so it might be worth a try. I think the man's name is Yannis and he speaks enough English to be understood. His yard is down the lane on the corner immediately next to the turnoff to the airport, opposit...

Re: Pervolakia Gorge

Jeff, I'd forgotten about this post of yours from 2015 until yesterday, when we walked the Pervolakia Gorge for the first time and came across the memorial to the two climbers, Albert and Robert. I wonder if you've been there, if you live close by? About 40 minutes in from the top of the gorge you c...

Can anyone ID this night calling bird?

I'm hoping one of you amateur ornithologists out there can identify a bird -- I assume it's a bird and not a frog or similar -- which has been calling in the evening and after dark. The sound is quite a similar to the "churring" of a nightjar, but higher and softer; a continuous single not...

Re: More Questions from the newbies

Warwick is correct. The going rate for a PO box inside Sitia post office, for example, is 56 euros a year. It might seem a bit steep but approx 1 euro a week seems worth it for the reassurance that mail is not left, sometimes for weeks on end, in the local kafenion. And Mackie, I reckon your post sh...

Re: IKA INFO FOR THE BUILDERS

Please sir .... yes you, with his hand up at the back of the class ... how do you know for certain that all IKA has been paid.. after 14 years with no "pink slips" in my possession, no record of where the builder is now, no formal invoice(s) for work carried out, and the "agent" ...

Re: Carry-On Counting

Maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age but I am most certainly NOT entertained by the sight of fellow passengers banging and crashing down the aisle with too many bags, swinging their backpacks into your face, and hogging all the overhead locker space. This anti-social behaviour is probably the...

Unless I have missed it amid all the sound and fury, I'm not sure that Barnier has been authorised to state that the UK's future relationship with the EU "will be based on one of the existing relationships.." (ie Norway, Canada, Switzerland.) In fact, if the media is to be believed, Barnie...

I think it probably is a Firefox problem, Warwick, as it worked fine for me too using Chrome on Win10.

Re: Best places to source DIY products?

Yes, Warwick is correct about Praktiker. It's got just about everything you could conceivably need and well worth a trip down to Heraklion if you don't mind the drive. Dead easy to find. Take the second exit off the main highway from the west (not into Heraklion centre) but the next one marked for t...

Re: Earth Tremor

Yes, we felt it in our village near Sitia, Jeff. it was magnitude 4.4, according to the EMSC website. Quite lively for about 5 to 10 seconds with a noise like a sudden rush of wind. Didn't feel a second shock though.

Re: Wasps still around

Stop Press: Suddenly they have gone! Well, almost. Maybe it was last night's rain or the sudden temperature drop at night, but only a few stragglers remain and they are very sleepy. Warwick is right, Kathleen, they are carnivores alright. They do like a nice juicy brizola, but a tin of cat food will...
