Re: Making olive oil from our few trees

chrissy, you could get up to 20 litres of oil off your five trees if they are well loaded. Try to get a friendly neighbour to harvest them when he/she does their own trees if you can, and your oil would be part of that batch -- but it would still be some of yours!

Re: Polecats

I believe Honda and Toyota are both facing class actions over the use of soy in the coating of electric cables, which is said to attract mice (and possibly martens?) Coincidentally I spent this morning cleaning all manner of stuff off the engine block and around the plugs of our Hyundai, after it sm...

Earthquake Insurance

Does anybody know how much it costs to obtain a "Certificate of Static Competence" on a property in order to add earthquake cover to a domestic insurance policy? (on a pre-1960s stone house that hasn't had such a certificate issued before.) And is any qualified building engineer able to is...

Re: Flights

Oh dear, I wasn't going to comment on this thread, but I can't resist, after watching the clip of Lord Lisvane, aka Sir Robert Rogers, a former principal clerk of the House of Commons and a man of immense knowledge and good sense. I met him once, in a previous life, and I always thought he would mak...

Re: Vehicle Testing

It surprises me that motorbikes don't need the intermediate emissions test, as some of them are the worst offenders, judging by the plumes of blue smoke trailing along behind them -- although I'm sure you are not one of them Warwick

Re: Paying Electric bills

Do that moggieman, it really is very easy now to set up regular payments for the utilities at your bank. It wasn't always this simple.. I remember the days not so long ago when we had to queue at the counters of DEH, the water company, etc, to get the "stamps," but that has all changed in ...

Re: Mosquitos

Ah, you mean the " curly-wurlies " aka " stink worms " that seem to just emerge from the walls? They smell revolting if crushed and the birds and cats won't touch them, so I guess they are pretty toxic. Brushing them into a dustpan and dropping them into the scrub down the road d...

Re: Mosquitos

They must all be down our end of the island then filippos. I've just read on the internet that a fine spray of ordinary soapy water is a good roach killer. Who knew?

Re: Mosquitos

Never mind wasps or mozzies, I've never seen so many cockroaches around... the cats are having a fine old time chasing them down. Didn't I read somewhere that they would survive even a "nuclear winter?" Oh dear.

Re: How to become a greek resident

No, the process wasn't illegal, chrissy, as I'm sure the civil servant who got me to sign the declaration (a legal document as Warwick pointed out) would not have put her job at risk -- and she had nothing to gain by it. It's just that rules and regs in Greece are quite "elastic," and ofte...

Re: How to become a greek resident

Apropos the comments by filippos and Warwick, yes I suppose it might depend on an individual seller or dealership whether or not you are asked for a residence card when buying a car. I should have added, chrissyg, that we bought ours from a main dealership and the salesman was initially somewhat con...

Re: How to become a greek resident

chrissyg, let me assure you that you do NOT need a residency certificate to buy a car here. We have had a car for over five years and have never been resident in Greece for tax purposes nor had a residence card, whether beige, blue or any other colour. The only conditions we had to meet were these: ...

Re: Project manager percentage?

That sounds pretty fair, audacity. We paid a bit more than that 14 years ago for everything you list above, but we also had a guaranteed end stop date written in, so maybe you should agree to the 15% on condition that the project is finished within an agreed timetable. In our case it was a complete ...
