Re: Carry-On Counting

Maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age but I am most certainly NOT entertained by the sight of fellow passengers banging and crashing down the aisle with too many bags, swinging their backpacks into your face, and hogging all the overhead locker space. This anti-social behaviour is probably the...

Re: That's all right then

Unless I have missed it amid all the sound and fury, I'm not sure that Barnier has been authorised to state that the UK's future relationship with the EU "will be based on one of the existing relationships.." (ie Norway, Canada, Switzerland.) In fact, if the media is to be believed, Barnie...

Re: Car tax for 2018

I think it probably is a Firefox problem, Warwick, as it worked fine for me too using Chrome on Win10.

Re: Best places to source DIY products?

Yes, Warwick is correct about Praktiker. It's got just about everything you could conceivably need and well worth a trip down to Heraklion if you don't mind the drive. Dead easy to find. Take the second exit off the main highway from the west (not into Heraklion centre) but the next one marked for t...

Re: Earth Tremor

Yes, we felt it in our village near Sitia, Jeff. it was magnitude 4.4, according to the EMSC website. Quite lively for about 5 to 10 seconds with a noise like a sudden rush of wind. Didn't feel a second shock though.

Re: Wasps still around

Stop Press: Suddenly they have gone! Well, almost. Maybe it was last night's rain or the sudden temperature drop at night, but only a few stragglers remain and they are very sleepy. Warwick is right, Kathleen, they are carnivores alright. They do like a nice juicy brizola, but a tin of cat food will...

Wasps still around

I know we touched on this topic briefly in another post a few weeks ago, but does anyone else agree that wasps have been and continue to be a particular menace this year? Yes I know they can smell cat food at 100 paces and we have only ourselves to blame for that, but I can't remember when there hav...

Re: English speaking accountant

No, I wasn't thinking that. Just assumed you hadn't been on the forum for a while. If you'd like me to forewarn him that you might wish to use his services I can pop in to see him next week and tell him another ex-pat will be calling in. Give me any further details - your name? - you might wish me t...

Re: English speaking accountant

Well OK, I'm perfectly happy to do that, but I just thought it would avoid more verbiage on the forum. So far Sinkingslowly hasn't PM'd me anyway, but if anyone else is interested, the accountant is Manolis Psikarakis, Piskokefalou Avenue 4, 72300 Sitia. email: psikarakis@otenet.gr He deals with qui...

Re: Mobile phone shops (Chania/Kalives)

Hi Tim, Yes I believe you can do this, as I have a cheap PAYG handset with a Greek SIM (though I'm sure you could just buy the SIM without a handset) and I just top it up online after setting up a Vodafone Greece account (no contract needed.) Happy to give you the details over a couple of Alfa beers...

Re: English speaking accountant

Well, as an East End boy I might be able to recommend someone in Sitia (it's only 50 mins or so from your neck of the woods.) If you want to send me a PM I'll give you the details.

Just beware putting mothballs in your wood pile. Naphthalene is highly flammable ... as I recall from my miss-spent childhood.

Re: VPN

Norton Security (Symantec) are currently plugging their VPN to their subscribers because of the so-called KRACK security flaw which has just been discovered to attack almost any device that uses wifi -- that's just about everything, right?! That's the bad news. The good news is that KRACK does not a...

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

The word I was searching for was, indeed, Laiki, Warwick and I'm happy to say that my Greek has come on a bit since then and I've not made that mistake again. I accept that the words are not that similar, so I didn't even have the excuse a friend had when she introduced her daughter as her cucumber....

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

Once, during our early days in Crete, I hoped to impress our elderly neighbour, Georgos, who appeared to be waiting for a lift, by asking him in Greek if he was on the way to the market. I remembered that the word started with "L" and ended in "i" "Kalimera Georgo, sto Lekan...
