Re: Ears syringed

Have you tried olive oil drops? Seriously, it was recommended by my GP in the UK many years ago and it has always worked for me. Get one of those small glass phials with a rubber "balloon" dropper (you can probably get them at your local pharmacy) and squeeze a few drops of olive oil into ...

Re: phone is dead

Why don't you just go to a Vodafone or Germanos shop in Chania and buy one? There must be loads of mobile phone shops there. Heck, we have at least four in sleepy old Sitia!

Re: Goldcar hire company

Woody, are you familiar with the arrivals area at Heraklion Airport? As you emerge from the baggage collection area into the small hall where most of the car hire desks are located, there are usually loads of reps holding up cards with names/companies etc, so chances are there should be someone with...

Re: Mystery

Do the flags suggest any kind of pattern, ie, seen from above, would they form a grid, or are they in a straight line ? Maybe they follow a conduit underground (though not on your friend's roof I would assume) that a utility company needs to pinpoint for some reason. A bit like the orange marker pos...

Re: They Paved Paradise...

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.. or just sigh and ask: "where have we heard 'promises' like this before?" For the past 14 years (or longer?) there have been 'plans' to build hotels, golf courses and villas at Cape Sideros, east of Sitia, on land owned by the Toplou Monastery. But has...

Re: dog barking at night

If you haven't noticed already, you will discover that the Greeks have an odd relationship with dogs. They will "own" them but quite happily leave them tied up all day and night, outside their houses, their gardens and in their olive groves. You will rarely see them being taken for a walk ...

Re: Heraklion Airport Upgraded

Passed through the airport today and although it is still a work in progress (not actually completed.. the far end up by the domestic gates is still being refurbished) I have to say it's a vast improvement once you get airside... but 13 million euros ?? ... hmmm... hard to see where all that has gon...

Re: Hose pipe ban ?

Agree with you Jeff.. and well past time in my view.. but I wish our Greek neighbours took the problem more seriously. Her over the road still spends up to an hour every few days with the hose on full blast, sluicing down her terrace, with all that precious water flowing down the road and into the d...

Re: Damaged telephone socket after electric storm

If that had happened to me I would assume that Cosmote would come and fix it. You don't say where you are on the island, but assuming you are close to a Cosmote office I suggest you get down there tomorrow and explain what happened, and chances are they'll come out and fit you a new socket. They are...

Re: Ryanair

Hi Tim, we have done the Sitia/Athens/Heathrow leg several times with Aegean/Olympic and, as altohb says, the connection time at Athens is tight, but we have never missed one yet! If your inbound from Sitia lands within one hour of your Heathrow departure, a flight "ambassador" will be at ...

Re: Apothiki construction: tax??

After the work on our house had finished and the kitchen fitter had left, I switched on the electric oven but nothing happened. Checked the fuses. All OK. Called the man back. He checked the fuses. All OK. "Ah," he said, "I remember now ..." as he pulled the oven out from the wor...

Re: Scrap Dealer near Sitia?

Not sure if the guy actually deals in scrap cars, but his yard usually contains accident wrecks, so it might be worth a try. I think the man's name is Yannis and he speaks enough English to be understood. His yard is down the lane on the corner immediately next to the turnoff to the airport, opposit...
