Re: Olive Fly (Dacus Oleae)

I'm ashamed to admit that through a combination of ignorance and complacency I have not previously taken any action to control olive fly in my olive grove. I tend to be guided by my neighbours who, as fly infestation has not been a major problem in this area recently, don't put out fly traps. Last y...

Olive Fly (Dacus Oleae)

Olive fly infestation seems particularly bad in this area (Agios Vasilios) this year with my own crop devastated, any other olive growers on the forum have a similar problem?

Re: Reading Recomendations for Maud

I couldn't agree more Warwick, except to say that I would not recommend anything which fell into category 2 and 3 and that you should perhaps have added a category 4 - Great works of literature under which I would include the Kazantzakis novel. 'Great works of literature' - how pompous, can't belie...

Re: Reading Recomendations for Maud

1 Some are purely factual, like the history and travel books mentioned. 2 Some tell a story. The story might be based on fact and may vary from sticking closely to real events to being mainly fiction set around some event. 3 Some appear to tell a story but really the story is just a contrivance on ...

Reading Recomendations for Maud

In an earlier thread I promised to share with Maud some of my favourite literature about Crete, apologies it has taken a while to post this list The Eagles of Crete Colin James Heroes of the resistance become guerillas in hiding as civil war breaks out in Crete in April 1947. Colin James’ book descr...

Re: Buying a car in Crete

Go to Supercars Chania and speak to the owner Manolis he's a great guy and speaks very good English, Manolis and his uncle will organise all the paperwork and chauffeur you around the various offices, making it as simple as buying a car in the UK. On the first occasion I bought a car from Supercars ...

Post by mouche » Tue Aug 29, 2017 7:38 am Well, we ran outside and so did the people woring in the taverna. Might add that it was only one floor! Actually at one of the beaches in the Kalyves area! Going back to the house we stopped at Inka in Kalyves and the whole place was a total mess with deter...

Re: Citreon 2CV

There is (or was the last time I drove past a couple of months ago) a 2CV parked outside a petrol station on the Spili-Agia Galini road, beyond the village of Akoumia and from memory, about 10k from Galini, the garage is on the right hand side as you drive towards Agia Galini. The car has been there...

Re: Exchange rates

Post by Phild » Wed Aug 23, 2017 7:53 am Good analysis, Warwick! I'd just like to add the following: Kilkis wrote: Anything can act as money ...or, in fact, 'nothing'. We just all have to agree to do some work - this can be much more flexible than the current system of work - we will all be able to...

A new cattery on Crete

Forum readers may wish to be aware of a new cattery on Crete, I have previously been unable to find a cattery so this may well be a first for Crete. Located in Mariou, Nr Plakias on the south coast the cattery is run by Manuela Liebich, her email is manu.liebich@gmail.com.. I can thoroughly recommen...

Re: Places to visit

by Maud » Mon Aug 07, 2017 12:41 pm I bought our son ' The Cretan Way' for his birthday in June Peter. I haven't read it yet but I am looking forward to borrowing it. The Pasquini book is an interesting study of people he meets en route, rather than purely a walking guide. I am sure you will enjoy ...

Re: Places to visit

Thanks Maude, I was not aware of Claude Pasquini's book. For a more recent account of long distance walking in Crete it's hard to beat 'The Cretan Way' by Luca Gianotti - makes you want to pull your boots on.

Re: Places to visit

Mixos recommended reading for those interested in the WW2 invasion of Crete and the period of the German occupation is excellent, Anthony Beevor providing detail and critical analysis of the invasion and the allied resistance whilst the brilliant 'Cretan Runner' by George Psychoundakis provides a ra...

Re: Photos (a few more)

I must admit, Photo 30 did get me thinking how many of those bends I could overcook on my motorbike and how many changes of underwear would be necessary to get to the bottom? At my age I think I'll give it a miss but once upon a time... Warwick Its hard to tell from fillipos photo but unless the ro...
