Re: Cyprus or Crete ?

Hello Cyprusman, Good luck with whatever you decide to do. - Keep us informed. We share our time between the U.K. and Crete, and in many ways I wish we had moved there permanently some years ago, but family commitments prevented it. We have spent a lot of time on the island ever since 1979 and watch...

Re: The road to Zakros

Glad you are enjoying it Guy. Have you found all three beaches at Xerokambos? We know a German chap who has been travelling to Crete twice a year since the late 1970’s. He stays for two weeks at Kato Zakros each time, and two weeks down near us. - He does a lot of walking and swimming, so both locat...

Re: The road to Zakros

If you decide to walk it Guy, walk down rather than up. I would probably also avoid it in August, but if you do decide to give it a go, make sure it is at ‘crack of dawn.’ - You will be glad to have a dip in the sea at the end of it! I think you should be able to find one of the locals would provide...

Re: The road to Zakros

One of the tavernas had a few beach umbrellas out the last time we were there Mixos, but I am not sure it is a regular occurrence. It is good advice to have ones own anyway! We usually do the route from the South Coast to the North Coast... but only because we always start our journey from home on t...

Re: The road to Zakros

It is heaven! The road is good. We drive it in a 7.5 m motorhome. (We drive to Kriti in the ‘van’ and use it for ‘holidays’ when we are there). Kato Zakros is always a place we visit. Make sure you go down to Xerokambos as well. There is a wetland nature reserve for birds, and a lovely unspoilt coas...

Re: Storm Clouds.

I think that was also the worry Warwick. There is no incentive for the EU to buy lamb and mutton from the U.K. under WTO rules......they might as well buy it cheaper from N.Z. I am sure that I am not the only one on here old enough to remember the intense advertising even within the U.K. for the Bri...

Re: Storm Clouds.

Interestingly Kamisiana, last week it was The Royal Welsh Show at Builth Wells. It is the biggest agricultural show in Europe. Various meetings were held by farming associations during the show, and representatives were then interviewed on the television. You are quite correct, Welsh farmers were le...

Re: Storm Clouds.

I wrote ‘when’ to begin with Phild.....but edited it to ‘if’ as I was sure there would be people here who would accuse me of scaremongering! You are quite correct about pensions Jeffstclair. Even if there is a ‘deal’ there are going to be a lot of poorer people around! It is all well and good for po...

Re: Storm Clouds.

I have not posted on here, (or visited the site), for a long time. A couple of weeks ago I ‘popped in’ to see what was happening. I was not going to bother/to post, but having read this thread I just felt I had to make a point. Once people make up their mind about something, it is hard to change it....

Re: Terrible flood disaster in Athens

In 1977 thirteen people died in the centre of Athens in a flood. The rain was very localised this time. - Not a drop fell in the city centre, although it has now been pouring with rain for almost two days. It is just like a tropical storm, according to a friend who lives there.

Re: Wind

Sorry Raw, that should be 'reminded' in the quote you have copied....not remained! - It's that predictive text! I am sure you will find a great place to have a home on Crete. It is a windy island so you will never escape it completely but choose your situation well and take advice. - You will be fin...

Re: Places to visit

I bought our son ' The Cretan Way' for his birthday in June Peter. I haven't read it yet but I am looking forward to borrowing it. The Pasquini book is an interesting study of people he meets en route, rather than purely a walking guide. I am sure you will enjoy it. Any further recommendations of go...

Re: Places to visit

I actually had a signed copy of George Psychoundakis's book The Cretan Runner. I bought it in the days when he was still working at the cemetery. We visited with a friend who was a Commander in the Greek navy and knew George, so I took the book with me and obtained his signature. Sadly I loaned the ...
