Re: Terrible flood disaster in Athens

In 1977 thirteen people died in the centre of Athens in a flood. The rain was very localised this time. - Not a drop fell in the city centre, although it has now been pouring with rain for almost two days. It is just like a tropical storm, according to a friend who lives there.

Re: Wind

Sorry Raw, that should be 'reminded' in the quote you have copied....not remained! - It's that predictive text! I am sure you will find a great place to have a home on Crete. It is a windy island so you will never escape it completely but choose your situation well and take advice. - You will be fin...

Re: Places to visit

I bought our son ' The Cretan Way' for his birthday in June Peter. I haven't read it yet but I am looking forward to borrowing it. The Pasquini book is an interesting study of people he meets en route, rather than purely a walking guide. I am sure you will enjoy it. Any further recommendations of go...

Re: Places to visit

I actually had a signed copy of George Psychoundakis's book The Cretan Runner. I bought it in the days when he was still working at the cemetery. We visited with a friend who was a Commander in the Greek navy and knew George, so I took the book with me and obtained his signature. Sadly I loaned the ...

Re: Places to visit

Thanks for the up-date Filippos. I am glad to hear the place is still going! I have got some good photos of us there over the years .....but not as good as the ones you have just added to the other thread! - Thank you again for your excellent 'study' of Crete and all things Cretan!

Re: Wind

Yes Bob, I have read it and would recommend it to others. It is tucked away somewhere in one of the bookcases. You have just reminded me to re-read it! Places like Plakias and Frangokastello on the south west coast are notorious for strong winds Raw, but weather on the south coast is often good when...

Re: Places to visit

The original 'war museum' in Askyfou was run by an elderly chap over 40 years ago Mixos. I doubt if he is still going, but one never knows with these old Cretans! Some years later another neighbour opened one. - World War Three nearly broke out! I have never visited the second one, and it has been a...

Re: Wind

If you have somewhere 'in mind' for building Raw, ask a friend who is 'local' if it is a windy place! I know some Germans who did not listen to local advice. Everyone told them not to build on a piece of land that had an amazing view, but it was where the old threshing circle for the village had bee...

Re: Places to visit

I would do Hania as one excursion, but there is another one much closer to you that I would also make time for. I assume your relative will be familiar with the burning of the villages of the Amari Valley? Each village has a monument to those who were massacred. A good trip for your guests to do wou...

Re: Sad situation reported by the Guardian

Helena Smith is a friend of a friend of mine. (Also a journalist in Athens). It is a good, accurate, article and worth a read. Life in Athens for many is really tough. Not enough money to pay for heating during the recent cold winter, no money to use their air conditioning this summer, no money to b...

Re: New residency rules post Brexit - reciprocity in Greece

I found your post thoughtfully presented Guy. It emphasised how the future of ex pats, (which is what this forum is about), are not the 'b all and end all' of the Brexit negotiations. - People get too focused on their own situations, without realiseing how unimportant that is re the bigger picture. ...

Re: Greek mobiles receiving & sending to UK 'roaming' mobile

I agree with you Kilkis. Now EU legislation has stopped roaming charges, the only way to find out the true cost is to look up the information re your own provider. Unfortunately there has been some misunderstanding by people that no roaming charges means cheaper calls all round. I have no idea why t...

Re: Greek mobiles receiving & sending to UK 'roaming' mobile

Sorry, I didn't make that clear. Her mobile was a French one. She was told that as she was using a French mobile (sim) in France, it wouldn't be seen as 'roaming'. This had nothing to do with her provider. It is all about the 'hidden' aspects of 'roaming.' If she used a UK sim in France it would be ...

Re: Greek mobiles receiving & sending to UK 'roaming' mobile

You could be correct Kilkis. The only reason I gave the explanation above is because I saw a question about 'roaming' charges being answered by some technical person on the BBC News. The question was from a lady who lives in France but rings her daughter regularly in the UK. She wanted to know if it...

Re: Greek mobiles receiving & sending to UK 'roaming' mobile

Don't forget that the 'roaming' charge is only if you are using a sim 'foreign' to the country you are in when you make the call. - Hence the word roaming.' - It is cheaper to ring the UK from Greece on your UK mobile than a Greek one. (You are then roaming abroad!). A call to a Greek mobile or U.K....
