Re: Day trip to Santorini

My wife did a yoga course in Santorini (you couldn’t make this up). She flew from Heraklion - over 2 hours as it was via Athens. On the way back she did the journey on the high speed ferry to Heraklion - well, not that high speed (about 2.5 hours) so it is quite a long day if you are nearer Chania.

Re: rent or buy?

I think a good UK accountant could be very useful to some people. You are absolutely correct, Filippos. Indeed it was a good accountant who told me, at the time, that I had to spend a night in the property I had been renting if I wanted to avoid CGT. The value of a good accountant or lawyer is ofte...

Re: rent or buy?

I was an ‘accidental landlord’ in the U.K. for 11 years; avoided paying any tax at all on the capital gain by spending a night in the property after the last tenant had left and before it was sold. I’m sure a good accountant will think of a way of avoiding this new tax.

Re: rent or buy?

Kathleen, I think you have the right attitude. I lived in the Netherlands for four years in the early 2000s. We rented for three months then bought a lovely three story 17th Century house on a canal in Delft. We were given a 120% interest only 75 year mortgage by the bank (unbelievably!)- the extra ...

Re: The Will of the People

Maybe it is a matter of which elite you want to rule you - the European one or the British one. They are both elected, after all.

Re: Pound vs Euro

I used to worry about ‘what ifs’ on currency the whole time. The only way I could stop I was by having some each of £,€ and $. And remembering the sunshine and the view are free what ever currency you’ve got.

Re: The Will of the People

The Brexit Party: Let’s kick the establishment. And here is one of our first candidates, whose father was editor of the Times, whose brother is a multi millionaire MP, and who has written articles about how wonderful it is to drive her Bentley. “Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss”. The Who - Wo...

Re: The Will of the People

From The Independent. Jacob Rees-Mogg said on Friday morning: “If a long extension leaves us stuck in the EU we should be as difficult as possible. We could veto any increase in the budget, obstruct the putative EU army and block Mr Macron’s integrationist schemes.” If this is true, I'm disgusted. ...

Re: The Will of the People

This has certainly got people engaged in politics - and the U.K. is the country that comes 19th in the % of the electorate who vote in European elections; we never bothered much about it before. We could be coming to the endgame now. The U.K. had a very weak negotiating position, whatever the nonsen...

Re: The Will of the People

I only live in a very small town yet there was a pro brexit march, so I can only imagine what it was like in other larger towns. Well I live in a large, rich town full of middle class graduates, Michelin star restaurants and a famous public school. The only marching likely to go on here is if the q...
