Re: dog barking at night

Every night we hear the most beautiful sound: scops owls calling to each other across the valley. It’s very Heaven.

Re: Looking to buy a holiday home..

Hi. This is a bit off topic, but related. My advice to anyone buying in Crete, above everything else, is to get a good lawyer to help with the purchase. As a byproduct they can get you a decent accountant for all that property tax stuff. We have a 200 year old house with a good sized garden and oliv...

Re: Plane spotter arrested near CHQ Airport

The naval vessels are often not identified on the site but if you can get the hull number (painted large on both sides) they can almost always be found on Wikipedia or another shipping site (Warships of the World is good) etc etc I guess this must be a boy thing..... This is the best comment ever o...

Re: Ryanair

We were unlucky enough to fly from Heraklion last week - EasyJet was cheaper than RyanAir. No one, neither airlines or passengers, should have to pay for travel through this airport- the departure lounge was an old arrivals hall with baggage carousels still in it - we used these as seating. And if a...

Re: Yannis: The Return

Is he a good Economist? Mmm, Possibly, but his own description of ‘accidental economist’ is probably more accurate. What he is not is a good politician. Based on the EU debt negotiation farce of a few years ago, he doesn’t seem to understand how people think or react - which suggests he doesn’t unde...

Re: Abyss.

I don’t think it’s always right that a government should do nothing. When you come into government, there are things that previous governments will have done (or not done) that you will think need changing, and over time in government there will be events that need a response - the poisoning in Sali...

Re: Abyss.

It may well be true that it’s hard to clear up a mess you’ve made, especially if you are a politician. Nonetheless, the fact remains: it is extremely poor form not to do so, until you have been told unequivocally to stop. What you should never do is run away. I strongly feel this is a requisite of p...

That would be a shame. I’ve only ever used AirBnB in London and it’s great.

Re: Abyss.

Whatever your politics, whatever your view on Brexit, you must regard Cameron as a disgrace. To create a mess and then leave without cleaning it up is extremely poor form.

Re: Overseas Voting Rights Bill

In 18 years out of the U.K. I didn’t vote once - if you’ve left your home country to live elsewhere you’re not really taking part in nation-building so your right to vote seemed a bit flimsy. As a guest in another country, there’s no question of demanding a right to vote.

I wasn't thinking of the "something will turn up" approach, but of this quote: "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen shillings and six [pence], result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result mi...

Re: Cost of Living

That is an admirably Mr Micawber attitude, Kilkis. We wrestle with money the whole of our lives- so, the obvious answer to the question 'how much do you need to live in Crete? is: 10% more than you've got. In truth, the unhappiest person I know is a chap I was at college with who's now a multimillio...
