Re: Pireaus Bank

To quote the comedian Al Murray when explaining the Euro crisis: ‘it’s much more complicated than that’ (it’s on YouTube - funny but not for the faint-hearted). Varoufakis was right about the basic multiplier calculation, but you can’t magic up public spending in isolation - there are other economic...

Re: How to become a greek resident

A repetitive parrot speaking: get a lawyer. The dealer we bought ours through was friends with our lawyer - and we drove in our car to register as residents.....I lived in Africa for 14 years and Greek bureaucracy is an absolute breeze, believe me.

Re: Airbnb

I’ve used Airbnb in London twice (but not in Greece). It’s a lot cheaper than hotels and there are some nice places. The first place was a self-contained flat and had a kitchen so I could have had meals in - but it was next to Marylebone High Street where there are some very good restaurants and any...

Re: Flights December - January

I agree that the Sofitel is OK for whiling away time but I'd add the rider "provided you don't stay there overnight". Indeed - it's seen better days. We used to stay there as a treat when flying from Nairobi to Crete via Cairo (EgyptAir is the only airline I've been on the offers a prayer...

Re: Flights December - January

I guess we are in a slightly different situation from most here - we have school age children so there’s generally a choice: 1. Take them out of school early thus getting a cheaper flight (the last week of school when they are young is a waste of time - it’s basically childcare for working parents w...

Re: Flights December - January

Thanks both - that’s what I thought. Via Athens it is - and a deep breath before looking at the price.

Re: Storm Clouds.

The crucial point to realise is that overriding everything else the British government is scared. Remembering this helps understand each of their actions.

Re: The road to Zakros

Well, you are all correct- it’s lovely in the East. We stayed at Yiannis’ Retreat in Kato Zakros - a steal at €60 a night. The only beach i’ve ever been as good as Xerocampos was in an equally isolated part of Mauritius years ago - and you couldn’t have a mud bath there. Amazing the difference betwe...

Re: Thinking about buying in Rethymnon?

Great place, Rethymnon. We had a couple of nights in Casa Moazzo in the centre of town last week. Like Clio says it is crowded at this time of year - reminded me of Venice in that respect - and the drainage is rubbish. I’ve always thought we might move to there or Chania when we are older and need t...

What’s that sound that can’t be heard in this thread? Oh yes, it’s the sound of the penny dropping.

Re: dog barking at night

Every night we hear the most beautiful sound: scops owls calling to each other across the valley. It’s very Heaven.
