Re: Central heating in winter?

Does anyone know any installers near Rethymno, Arkadi side? Thanks Steve Have you enquired at Rethymno Gas, Misiria as you drive into Rethymnon on the beach road. Friends of mine had it installed, not sure who by, but they were happy with it. If they can not do it I am sure they will point you in t...

Re: Renting AirBnb? Finance Ministry is looking for you..

Friends are renting a village house under the new simplified system. They are restricted to maximum of 90days summer letting, through Air BnB and other sites, which they have to declare and pay 15% tax. Long term winter rental - 5 months - also has to be declared for tax purposes.

Re: Top up mobile phones from bank account?

I forgot to top up my Vodaphone account end of 2015, which I think was when they changed to three months retention. I lost the few Euros credit I had but not my number. As a result I registered for my account online. I tend to keep a minimum on balance, but get 400 mins free to Greek numbers and loa...

Re: Top up mobile phones from bank account?

I have a pay as you go account with VodaphoneGR. I am registered on line and can top up from UK as I wish. Usually just put the minimum 5€ on to keep things going in between visits over the winter.

Re: postal service

Have to say I was impressed by the postal service whilst I was out earlier this year. Having ordered items from UK online, I suddenly realised I had transposed my post box number. I was told by the company the items had been despatched and it was too late to amend the address. I resigned myself to d...

Re: Wrought iron gates

Hi Chrissy, the engineer actually had the brochure when we met him. I only told him the bits I wanted to use in the gate with a rough sketch and he took it from there. It is made of steel, about 3.25 mts long and 1.75 mts high. Lightweight solid panels in the lower area with 15mm square 'arrows' goi...

Re: Wrought iron gates

I had mine made by the local welding engineer in Pigi. The various fancy bits and pieces you may wish to have incorporated in it were all available from catalogues he had. It was made within a week and was fitted by him. I was also offered the option of having it made with an electrical opening syst...

Re: Transferwise are now a bank. Or are they?

I too use them having seen the early posts on this site about them and have since recommended them to friends over here. I tend to transfer funds during the year at a minimal level, because of the Greek bank insecurities, but the transfer is charged at such a low rate, about £5 for £1000 it is a bar...

Re: Safe As Houses?

I doubt that any of us who have second homes in Crete and still maintain UK residences would 'abandon' them in the event of not being able to sell. As Jeff said, mine was bought (off plan in 2004) to live in and enjoy, it has provided so much pleasure to myself and close family over the years. It wi...

Re: Gluten Free Dairy Free

There is a branch of Xalkiadakis (we always called it 'the Spar supermarket') on Eleftherias, the road going to the sea front, by the big roundabout as you come into Rethymnon from the East, on Machiton Scholis Chorofylakis. A large new branch of A and B also opened in the last few months on that ro...

Re: More Questions from the newbies

At the present time with UK/Greece being within the EU you can bring all of your bits and pieces over in a van or car, most I would anticipate would have been owned and used for over six months, but new items, other than vehicles, are not a problem. I would suggest you avoid transit via Switzerland,...

Re: House Insurance

Having been with Intasure for over eight years I finally got fed up with having to haggle over the price for renewals each year and switched to my local branch of Interamerican in Rethymnon. The premium was substantially lower for the same cover so I am happy. A point mentioned by them at the time, ...

Re: Up to date info needed for the Hersonissos / Heraklion Area

Welcome to the forum Mackie Suggest you look at Praktika for Electricals and Mattresses they are close to the airport at Heraklion. If you are prepared to order and wait there is also Ikea who will order and deliver but that takes more time since the goods are shipped from Athens. To get to both, on...
