Re: iPlayer

Hi Clio ....... I signed up for a trial and did briefly get C4 before they blocked it. (Can it be that you are receiving loud and clear because you're in the UK, not outside? If that's so I'm a bit bemused as to why you're using a VPN...?) ........ No, we're outside the UK and I need a UK VPN to acc...

Re: iPlayer

Hi Warwick I'm still a fan of the original Swedish buccaneers. Despite their site being widely blocked by ISPs, it's fairly easily accessible via proxy sites in countries that haven't banned it. Proxies come and go, but one or more will work. Try https://proxybay.one/ for a list. https://torrentz2.e...

Re: iPlayer

Hi Clio I’m sorry about your woes with PIA. I promise that when I posted on LIC on 21/8, I had just checked PIA’s London and Southampton servers with BBC and C4 and all was working fine. Unbelievably (timing wise), the BBC seems to have zapped it the very next day after my test. See this thread from...

Re: iPlayer

And just to update my earlier post, as of this afternoon, the UK and Southampton connections of Private Internet Access have been blocked by the BBC.

Re: iPlayer

Hi Clio The VPN I use https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ , and have used for years, is tested and working fine with both iPlayer and C4/All4 as of this afternoon. Current progs are playing without any problem. It has multiple servers worldwide, including 2 in the UK (London & Southampton), s...

Re: Places to visit

Preveli is well worth a visit on the south coast, but you'll be stretched to do it in your 4 hours. Almost directly due south of Rethymno, it would take about 50 - 60 minutes drive from the national road. Site of beach evacuations , the monastery has a nice little museum and there is a spectacular m...

Re: New residency rules post Brexit - reciprocity in Greece

.............................. A few years ago the tax code was changed to require anybody who lived here for more than 183 days in a year to become tax resident. It was fairly quickly changed to say that the 183 day criterion did not apply to "anyone staying for health, touristic or other per...

Re: Bicycle Hire in Kalyves area

If you don't find anything nearer to Kalyves, I can recommend http://olympicbike.com Markos, the owner, is a good guy, bikes are in great order and their service is reliable. We've used them a couple of times. For rentals outside of Rethymno, they charge EUR 25 delivery per bike. Expensive for just ...

Re: Internet in Crete

I've used for many years now, both in Crete and elsewhere, https://www.privateinternetaccess.com . For the single subscription, you can select from several worldwide locations, including 10 in the USA (Seattle, San Francisco, New York for example). I mainly use the 2 UK locations (London, Southampto...

Re: Cosmote Mobile

Hi Frank Apologies, I wasn't really having a pop at you. The exclamation mark at the end of your second sentence suggested a "how very dare that Greek telco not provide an English language option!", but I probably over - interpreted it. My grumpy days pass if I keep taking the tablets, so ...

Possibly the odd few have taken the really radical option of learning just a teeny weeny bit of Greek?

Re: Capital Control Issues

I was steeped, if not marinaded, in the whole CGT issue when we sold. We too only had plot value on the deeds, with a subsequent building put in place. The notary told our lawyer that the gain was sale proceeds less the plot value - "and here's a big CGT bill for your client". The clarific...

Re: Capital Control Issues

As Kathleen says, CGT was introduced on sales from 1/1/14. We sold in Jan 2015 and it was a live issue for us during the lead up to the notary contract. A few weeks before our completion, the government suspended CGT on property sales until 31/12/16. It went away for us in Jan 2015. I can't find a G...

Re: Where can I buy an exercise bike?

We always had good service from Bodybuilding Club (their Rethymno store) and bought quite a few bits from them over the years (treadmills and a cross trainer). They currently list a York exercise bike at €230 http://www.bbclub.gr/en/york-discover-plus-cycle-53044-en.html . Their store list shows a s...
