Re: beef for hamburgers

If you find yourself in the Apokoronas, John the English Butcher in Vamos on the road to Kalyves will sort out your barbecue requirements.

Re: Water Shortage?

Yes, reminds me of when we used to holiday on Chalki a little island off Rhodes. The water came in by tanker from the desalination plant in Rhodes - when it didn't arrive (because the demos hadn't paid their bills, maybe!) you showered from refilled water bottles warmed in the sun on the terrace. It...

Water Shortage?

We've been back in the UK for a fortnight, but when were in Crete there was much talk of an upcoming water shortage in the Apokoronas. Does anyone know if hosepipe bans/rota cuts or whatever are imminent? (we have friends going out there this week). I know there were problems with agricultural water...

Re: how to plant olives

Most trees need a little water in their first summer or two, but if you just want some trees to hold the land together and you have a good covering of soil you might consider:- Carobs, Italian cypress, Judas trees, some of the Eucalyptus', Holm Oaks, Mulberrys as well as Olives. Have a good search o...

Re: Car Tyres

With hire cars the driver is responsible for punctures and damage to the tyres (possibly suspension as well). Fortunately puncture repairs are cheap in Crete - my last one cost 7euros to fix.

Warwick, you forgot to mention dabbing your forehead with cooling raki - you know it's a cure for everything!

Re: Reflect heat from roof

In the UK I've seen celotex and kingspan used with good effect for the external insulation of existing flat roofs. They have a range of products that can be slabbed or surfaced over so that you can still use the roofspace (I don't know if you have a roof terrace up there or a watertank/solarpanel/ae...

Yes, we saw Brian & Andrew around the middle of May in Cafe Francoise in Almyrida and also at the taverna on Kalivaki Beach. Rumour is they are writing their memoirs. Can't wait!

Re: Hiring a (small) sailing boat in the Chania area?

the UCPA, slogan "Sport Your Nature", French sailing school in Almyrida hire out various craft by the hour. These include Hobicats, dinghies, paddle boards, kayaks etc. (they are situated on the seafront road next to rightly-popular Cafe Francoise)

Re: Furniture Storage in Crete

If you want to do a bit of homework, and see some of what furniture is readily available in the Chania area, check out the websites of Ikea (chania), Simple City (chania), CFS (apokoronas) and Jorgos Nikiforakis (pemonia, apokoronas). In addition there are lots of smaller furniture stores in the larg...

Re: Can anyone recommend a trypical Cretan taverna with Greek Music and Dancing, plate throwing

I too can recommend the "Crete Nights" at the Cretan Corner in Aptera/Megala Horafia, but be warned you run the risk of having to join in! I have been a few times with visitors and been chosen to dance - the problem is the real dancers are so good and professional you don't stand a chance ...

Re: heating source

We too use a log stove (basic model) and aircon units, the latest invertor model produces noticeably more heat than older ones that seem to sit and think about it alot of the time! Most villages have several olive and carob (excellent burners) farmers who will supply you with logs for your stove, we...

I suspect most of the US army, navy and air force personnel would probably use their forces-based web forums. If you are close to reasonable sized base like Souda Bay you can listen to their American Forces News (together with the amazing advertising aimed at their personnel - treats them like idiot...

Kilkis, I had the same problems when we got a smart tv - using the tv remote to select letters was very tedious. I got a bluetooth wireless Rii mini keyboard from Amazon for 15-20euros and it works perfectly, rechargeable and back-lit it's even got a built-in laser pointer!
