Depends who is filling them, I guess. Ours don't weigh anything like that much - we prefer to take more, smaller bags than risk back injury!

Re: Olive Oil Process Question

altohb wrote: Everyone's olives are processed separately... Isn't that subject to a minimum quantity. I thought each press had a minimum quantity that it could deal with. If you take in a quantity less than that, because you only have a few trees, then it gets pressed with other olives and you get ...

Re: Olive Oil Process Question

Everyone's olives are processed separately. When you take your sacks to the press you need to tell them if you want to take any oil away for yourself, or if you are selling all/some of it to the press. Your olives are weighed after leaves/twigs have been removed, and then go into the pressing proces...

Re: Still in Limbo

As for the taxation situation for pensioners????? No EU country is going to want to have UK pensioners living there, expecting to get free health care etc, yet not pay their taxes in the country they have chosen to live in! There are interesting times ahead! A good summary overall, Maud - except th...

Re: Heating my home

Just a word of warning about gas heaters - yes, they are efficient for warming, but they pump out moisture, so be aware that you may be creating or adding to an existing damp issue which is likely to result in mould. I know this from painful experience!

Re: How to become a greek resident

Jeff. the staff in the IKA office were very helpful when we did our S1 forms. You want the first floor, and the lady at the first window on the left is the one to talk to. I second the suggestion to take a few copies, just in case!

Re: When are small fires allowed again?

It varies from region to region, and you should check with the local fire brigade. Round here (Sitia) fires are normally banned from the end of April until the end of October. However, this year we had to stop burning mid April because of the lack of rain, and I will be checking before we start burn...

We use Despina Rizonaki. Her office is just round the corner from Eurobank, going up the hill, and more or less next to a fish shop. Her phone number is 6942-571841. We used her in the purchase of the land on which we built our house, and a further bit of land. She also did the requisite translation...

As a further to the question about payment of DEH bills - this can also be done using a debit card via the DEH website.

We use Manos Kastritis, Tim - he is the best dentist we've ever been to, anywhere, and his prices are ok too. His office is on the "dual carriageway" heading towards the tourist office, on the right hand side. Phone is 28430-26444 - normally by appointment, but he seems to fit in emergenci...

Re: Driving

We've both hired many times in the UK using our Greek licences, Jeff - no problems with Hertz, Avis, Budget or Europcar, so it may be that Sixt are being "picky". Your name is in Roman letters, which is what matters, surely and, as others have said, the codes are Europe wide.
