Re: dog barking at night

The randy cats are much, much worse. After many years I'm still surprised (almost) by the volume of noise emitted by a small bundle of fur. But that's life in Crete; there are so many good thinks that compensate handsomely.

Re: dog barking at night

Believe me, you'll get used to it. When we first arrived we were surrounded by neighbours with (mainly) yappy dogs and a few deep throated ones. They're doing their jobs of alarm raising when non-householders get close. The snag is, many of them include passing cars, cats and pine martens etc., as p...

Re: Driving

I had to obtain an International Driving Licence (mine from RAC) which cost not very much. All I remember is that it was mid 90s and could only have been for here or France but I don't have a clear recollection of which - no need to remember - but I think is was required for Greece.

Re: Kaolin Clay

I put "Kaolin clay Crete" into Google and the very top result was this site. It's a Cretan pottery near Heraklion. Informative about clay; has all contact details. They should be able to direct you to a supplier but so might a local potter.

Re: Olive oil, vinegar and now house-wine

.....S'pose I could be delicate and dip the bread in the oil lurking at the bottom of the salad bowl..... Wot? Doesn't everyone do this? Andrew Usually, yes but sometimes moderated according to the company; some people are very pernickety. Dipping bread in the salad bowl (especially when full and b...

Re: Olive oil, vinegar and now house-wine

.................Get them to dress the salad in the kitchen. Problem solved. Andrew Not entirely. What about us wot likes to slosh oil on a plate and dunk the bread in it while waitin' for starters. S'pose I could be delicate and dip the bread in the oil lurking at the bottom of the salad bowl. P.S...

Re: Olive oil, vinegar and now house-wine

Some time ago some idiots in Brussells ................Sealed bottles of both supplied to diners was deemed the answer. If you trace this back I think you'll find the idiots in Brussels were persuaded this was a good idea by heavy lobbying from major food producers, more specifically, those bottlin...

Re: Moving to crete and self employed

If you plan to do electrical work and work legally you'll need to get Greek qualifications whatever your UK ones. Whether or not the same applies to plumbing I don't know but it will be no surprise if it does.

Re: Any advice on starting a business in Crete?

First you'll need to get relevant documentation and set up a business which can involve a deal of red tape and some expense. It's highly unlikely there will be any grants and you may struggle to get a bank loan. I recommend you consult a good accountant. Running a business without the appropriate ap...

Re: Easyjet Chania

My guess would be that it is an example of "click bait". They have created an autmated email script that sends an email to everyone on their database advertising that flights are released for February and March. In order to. make the email more relevant the script also pulls the last non-...

Does 20 years qualify as 'historic'? If I remember correctly I was alerted to a sight for sore eyes in Rethymnon about 20 years ago. She was gorgeous.

Re: Plane spotter arrested near CHQ Airport

The naval vessels are often not identified on the site but if you can get the hull number (painted large on both sides) they can almost always be found on Wikipedia or another shipping site (Warships of the World is good) I guess this must be a boy thing..... This is the best comment ever on this w...
