Re: Local travel

Yes, the road is open and traffic flowing normally, though there are a couple of places where it's advisable to go a bit slowly. The KTEL website https://www.e-ktel.com/en/ is not very good at giving information proactively, but in my experience an email to the given address usually gets a speedy re...

Re: Cigarette smoke issue

I think the problem is that addicted smokers, however nice, educated, and informed about passive smoking can be completely oblivious to it when they are in the process of giving offence. I’ve recently been laid low by a particularly nasty bug, and my dear friend G, (who doesn’t read this forum) has ...

Re: Losing the View

Many years ago, staying for the first time in Athens, we arrived with laden rucksacks after midnight at our pre-booked city centre hotel, to find they had no record of our booking and no rooms. Some passing Kiwis mentioned that another hotel off Aeolou had rooms, and we slogged our way there in the ...

Re: Aegean bumping to Standby!

What a totally low life stupid statement/"question"! Mouche, I imagine that Kilkis has had the sense and dignity to ignore that unpleasantly provocative remark, which you've now made twice, presumably aiming to goad. I'm sure Warwick realised long since that the interminable, tedious verb...

The Storm and the Gorge

While sunbathing in Liverpool last week (as you do, occasionally, but not usually in February) I was getting alarming messages about the storm damage in Crete. Particularly scary was the video showing the collapse of the road through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge – the main access route to Plakias and its...

Funny, airports always make me feel like a character in another painting......

Re: Athens Airport --the long walk

That must have been you limping alongside me next to the out-of-action travelator, Mixos. I was the eejit who had decided to pack eight kilos of olives, honey, cheese etc into a non-wheeled holdall. And to think we used to complain about the Crete flights leaving from the remotest gate....

Re: That Flight

I'm really glad we got somewhere with it, Andrew, but feeling ever so slightly sorry for myself. I'm flying to the UK on Friday and for various reasons, mainly not wanting a five hour stopover in Athens, I am doing what I swore I would never do again after December's experience, and booked to go Rya...

That Flight

Starting a new thread because I'd inadvertently caused the previous one (on the mystery flights to Gatwick) to wander off topic, and I do actually have some possibly useful news to relate and don't want it to get lost. After Andrew mentioned the difficulty he was having in getting information out of...

Re: Direct flight to Gatwick this morning.......

It's only a short flight across the sea to Athens True, but first you have to get to the plane, and the plane has to depart. And the winter weather here can adversely affect both those events as you can read elsewhere just now. I’ve never had a flight cancelled because of high winds but it happens ...

Re: Appalling weather

Filippos revives memories of our similar baptism, that long-ago first winter. Stuck in a dark, dank, miserable little rented flat, with a stove that just smouldered smokily, the mould crawling over the walls, looking out gloomily on the endless torrent of rain. I remember describing it as 'like livin...

Re: Appalling weather

The worst thing at home has been the endless power cuts. I'm touching my (wooden) desk with my other hand while typing this, but this is the first winter I can remember that we haven't had much in the way of power cuts. Some on-off blips, but none so far anyway of the hours-long blackouts. Maybe Re...

Re: Direct flight to Gatwick this morning.......

Don't be sniffy, Warwick. That is a genuinely useful bit of information. Andrew I've been trying to make sense of the Aegean site and it's all rather baffling. A Gatwick flight from Heraklion is mentioned for today at 6.35, at exactly the same time as one going to Heathrow which sounds odd. And I on...
