Re: Could this be true?

I was writing from personal experience, Warwick. Textbooks are useful but they don’t always tell you about what happens on the ground. When my husband died the notary complained about all the work that would have to be done because he hadn’t left a Greek will. Our three sons would have to read, sign...

Re: Could this be true?

If you are married, jointly own a property, have not made a will and one of you dies, the Greek law says that the survivor inherits half of the property. The other half is divided between any children of the marriage. Those children must then take a Greek tax number and have to submit Greek tax retu...

Re: ENFIA Property Tax online now

As far as I'm concerned, chance would be a fine thing to learn about my ENFIA liability in any language. No joy on getting into the site. "Me neither", said my accountant cheerfully. "It was just the same last year. It does 't occur to anyone that as soon as the information is availab...

Dentist Symeon Tzortzoglou

Does anyone happen to have a mobile number for Symeon Tzortzoglou? Or to know what's happening at the surgery?

Re: ENFIA 2019 Update

It’s very rare that once governments introduce a tax (and people get used to being the status quo) it is taken away in the future. Rare but not unheard of. OK it took some some 150 years to get rid of, so hardly a temporary tax, but the curtain did come down eventually on the the English Window Tax.

Re: Fish and Chips in Platanias?

Seconded. The place is modelled on the old-style Athenian μπαχαριαδικο, but with a modern spin. The fish and chips is a Cretan version too (none the worse for that) so the fish is salt cod. The portions are very generous, the round chips delicious, and the menu has plenty of other good things - the ...

The Way We Were

Worth watching (and listening) to this for the narrator's cut-glass vowels. I think I almost prefer Estuary English!

The Will of the (Greek) People

..... doesn't get much of a look-in here these days, but I feel somebody should mention that we've just had a general election. No surprises in the result which as expected gives us a new/old, or old/new government led by a man who exemplifies the dynastic aspect of Greek politics, while declaring h...

Lifts

A friend who is having trouble managing the steep stairs to his first-floor home, has been thinking how much nicer life would be, with a small in-house lift. There's plenty of room to install one but he has no idea of the cost, or where to go to get the work done. A couple of private houses in the v...

Re: Day trip to Santorini

Getting on for 20 years ago, a generous friend treated us to day-trip tickets to Santorini, and oh, what a memorable excursion that was. The leaflet we were given said the boat left Rethymno harbour at 7.30, but as we drove up to the dock at 7.10, it was casting off. Abandoning the car, we had to lo...

Re: Getting to the Glens

Thanks, that's a great tip. Civilised travel time, a night's proper sleep at the Millenium Hotel (if it's still standing and not buried under new platforms), then the early train north and I can be at my destination only a couple of hours later than with the all-nighter. And prices, now anyway, pret...

Re: Getting to the Glens

Thank you, that was really kind, especially as this 'ere trip looks like happening sooner rather than later. Nothing like a Greek website for getting useful info from Scotland!

Re: Getting to the Glens

Thanks for the thought, but it doesn't work. If I could fly direct to Inverness it would be lovely, but as things are it would mean an extra stage and lots more hours to the journey. It's looking like the station waiting room, if any!
