Re: Appalling weather

The worst thing at home has been the endless power cuts. I'm touching my (wooden) desk with my other hand while typing this, but this is the first winter I can remember that we haven't had much in the way of power cuts. Some on-off blips, but none so far anyway of the hours-long blackouts. Maybe Re...

Re: Direct flight to Gatwick this morning.......

Don't be sniffy, Warwick. That is a genuinely useful bit of information. Andrew I've been trying to make sense of the Aegean site and it's all rather baffling. A Gatwick flight from Heraklion is mentioned for today at 6.35, at exactly the same time as one going to Heathrow which sounds odd. And I on...

Re: Block on renewal of IKA books due to BREXIT

If you don't know the answer, presumably it could be either, which is the root of your "problem"? ONE of the roots, Andrew. The whole ongoing narrative, recorded in detail in case I eventually get sick of waiting and submit it to the Greek ombudsman - of whom, incidentally, I hear good th...

Re: Block on renewal of IKA books due to BREXIT

It's a good question, Warwick, and one I myself have been asking for two years. If anyone had ever been prepared to commit themselves to ruling on the question, I would be able to answer it. And I wouldn't have a problem....

Re: Block on renewal of IKA books due to BREXIT

Gosh, don't you boffins know a lot? And there was me thinking a relational database was a lonelyhearts site…I bow as always to chaps with mathematical brains, but would just point out that my AMKA number appears to be just as valid for purpose as it was two years ago and neither I nor anyone else ha...

Re: Block on renewal of IKA books due to BREXIT

All those posts about renewing books, and nobody seems really to have cottoned on to the fact – mentioned by Bobscott but it doesn't appear to have registered as the big step forward that it is – that you don’t actually need to renew your book now or hereafter. I’m as guilty of this as anyone. For r...

No need to worry about a thing, chaps, but let's all make sure we've got that cut, pasted and saved against the day when we may need ...

Of possible interest to anyone who's going to be in Athens in the next weeks, or who would like an excuse to go:

I thought it was wonderful - one of the best exhibitions I've ever seen. And it runs until the end of March.

Re: Please explain

It's not just for official documents but for practical everyday use. Traditionally the first male child is named after the father's father. One of our village patriarchs was called, let us say. Pandelis Lionakis. Five of his eight children were boys, and each of those subsequently produced a son, al...

Reporting back: A more than satisfactory experience. No queues at check-in, plane clean and tidy, cabin crew pleasant and efficient, arrival in Heraklion maybe ten minutes late but that's par for the course. As for the all-important issue of overweight baggage: I had a 23 kilo check-in bag, 12 kilos...

Re: Boat Tours?

As far as I know, private boat hire at least in the south of the island doesn't exist, because the seas are too dangerous. But there are plenty of trips available. Agia-galini.com will give you details of some nice little day excursions, and the ferries link at sfakia.com has detailed info and updat...

Re: Gatwick Chaos

PS Clio, I love Marrakech. Did you go over the Atlas Mountains to Taroudant, or west to Essaouira? Taroudant top of bucket list Guy, but even a brief trip to Marrakech, as this one was, has to include an Essaouira fix. I did one of those day excursions but was embarrassingly and puzzlingly late for ...
