Re: Is long line fishing with multiple hooks from the beach illegal?

Various licences issued by the CoastGuard/Port Police were either abolished or relaxed some years ago. This coincided with a sharp reduction in the number of officers available. If you fished from a boat you needed a boat Licence, a licence to fish from the boat and everyone on board the boat needed...

Re: Cost of getting temporary plates to export a car

Scooby Wrote I think my Uncle holds the prize for the worst car in the family.... a Wartburg. Wow. It may have been the worst car in your family but it was the best in mine (well the only one actually) The only weakness it had was a high fuel consumption and a rather weak clutch, I think I changed i...

Re: Green card car insurance.

Remember that the 'Green Card' only provides proof that you have third party insurance. Most Greek insurance companies do not provide comprehensive cover outside of Greece, they think driving outside of Greece is too risky! One even told me it was illegal to do so. It is worth checking with your ins...

Re: Pound - Euro fx rate

Warwick wrote Looking back a further 20 years when I first came on holiday to Greece £1 = Δρχ240 so in that 20 year period the Drachma more than halved in value against Sterling. That demonstrates that a 2:1 variation in exchange rate is quite possible in a 20 year time frame and this is why Greece ...

In effect you would probably have to get licences for two new businesses, going through all the requirements and costs for each.

If you have two businesses won't you be assessed for tax on both seperately?

Re: UK mobile providers

Yes I've had this with Three. I overcame it by getting another PAYG sim, putting some money on it and keeping it as a spare, though not in a phone otherwise it would register as being in Greece.Three assured me that even if they switched my 'roaming' off I could still receive calls from the UK, so a...

Re: Please explain

Well this thread has brought back memories. Firstly the main theme, of naming children after grandparents. This used to be the practice in England. Some years ago, whilst researching my wife's ancestors in Cumbria, we discovered a series of William, John, William, John relationships. We were okay un...

Re: Vehicle Testing

Is there an equivalent of a UK SORN? other than handing in the plates?

I'm currently stuck in the UK due to a medical condition and cannot get to Crete to either MOT my vehicle or hand in the plates.

Re: Paying Electric bills

For many years I've paid my Electricity Bill by "direct debit" from my Bank of Hania account so when I breezed in and asked them to set up a "direct debit" to pay my WIND account I was somewhat taken aback when they said "We don't deal with them. You can pay Vodafone or Cosm...

Re: Ferry Fire

I've done the Italy - Crete ferry crossings about 20 times and on one occasion only, did we have a complete evacuation at sea drill. Ships siren blowing seven times, assemble at the muster point, issued with life jackets, formed into a "conga" line and led down the stairs through the fire ...

Re: Cyprus or Crete ?

Warwick I may have misunderstood the solidarity tax. I thought the tax was always applied from zero. ie if the total income is €35.000 then you pay 6.5% on the whole €35,000, (€2,275) not just on the €5000 above €30,000 (€325) which would give a total of €1001. Did it change when they changed the pe...

Now the 'Head of the EU civil service' meets the elected US President to reach a trade deal. Apparently without consulting the leaders of the EU member states, France and Germany having now said he's not speaking for them.
