Re: AFM - 2 quick questions

Awesome, that's really good to know, as I'm hoping to buy a mobile that week and to try and get the internet hooked up to our new house too.

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

Κυρία Κλοκλό looks at about my level - I'll check it out!

I also often get the days of the week wrong, simply because I think of the week starting on Monday, not Sunday.

Re: AFM - 2 quick questions

Warwick, I'll very much defer to your advice in that case then! I have read the Living in Crete book a couple of times (and the updated information on this site too), and I had the impression that getting an AFM was all just a fairly straightforward exercise with no potentially problematic implicati...

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

Alan, I'd recommend Duolingo's Greek course (https://www.duolingo.com/). It's online, free, assumes no prior knowledge of the alphabet, has a very helpful community and will help you start learning the grammar once you move through the lessons a bit. It takes a little while to get going, but stick w...

Re: AFM - 2 quick questions

Thanks all. As far as I understand things, I don't particularly mind if I get registered as tax resident in Greece or not; I'll be earning in the UK and paying tax in the UK. Or would you advise trying to stay tax resident in the UK, as far as the Greek authorities are concerned? I need to get an AF...

AFM - 2 quick questions

G'day all, I'll shortly be in Crete to set a few things up ahead of our move. I've got two quick AFM questions - first up, should I take anything over and above my passport, birth cert and marriage cert (and photocopies)? Secondly, my wife won't be with me, but if I have her documents, will I be abl...

Garden centre recommendation

I was just wondering if anyone had recommendations for a good garden centre somewhere in Chania or the west? We're shortly moving to Crete and we want to get our veggie patch up and running as quickly as possible - so we're mainly looking for one that sells a good selection of herbs, vegetables and ...

Re: Accountant and removalist recommendations

Yes, I think you may be right - over the past few months I've been trying to do as much research as possible, so I've read as many old posts from here as I could, going back years, and I think it may well have been... hmm, a particularly good mechanic or car dealer that retired. I didn't recall corr...

Accountant and removalist recommendations

Right, time for something a bit more serious than capers and pomegranate molasses... I'm looking for a recommendation for a good accountant in Chania or western Crete. I can speak some Greek, but it's nowhere good enough to conduct my tax affairs in. And I'll be continuing to earn a (taxed) UK salar...

Re: Salted capers and pomegranate molasses

I had some with lamb a couple of weeks ago and I have to say that I was impressed too! Well, I think it stamnagathi; I had it explained to me as 'a wild horta a bit like chicory' and it was excellent :)

Re: Salted capers and pomegranate molasses

Thanks to all of you for the replies! We'll be based in the southwest, near Paleochora, but will be travelling all over the island fairly regularly, at least to start with. I didn't realise caper plants were quite so abundant here - having lived in central London for the past two decades, my foragin...

Salted capers and pomegranate molasses

G'day! So, we're all set to move to Crete in November. I'm in Crete now, ahead of the move, and I've been shopping around for all sorts of things. I cook - lots, it's one of my hobbies - and between Chania and Irakleio I've managed to find practically every herb and spice and condiment that I use re...

Re: Hello, and a quick question about living costs

Thanks so much for your responses! That's about what we thought, but we did want to make sure, because doing this would mean taking a substantial pay cut, and £20k for two people doesn't go very far in London at all (or Melbourne or Dublin, for that matter). So it is a little bit intimidating in som...
