Re: Silly Season in Greece.

Listen to Yanis Varoufakis as he explains how the EU used banks rather than tanks to subjugate a sovereign country. http://yanisvaroufakis.eu/2015/07/14/on-the-euro-summit-agreement-with-greece-my-resignation-and-what-it-all-means-for-greece-and-europe-in-conversation-with-phillip-adams/ Jon

Re: Silly Season in Greece.

Brian, This poster realises that the reason Greece was forced to accept a far worse deal this week is because the ECB in effect turned off the taps prior to the referendum and Herr Schauble actively mooted a five year Greek sabbatical from the EU which everyone knew would be permanent. Tsipras had t...

Re: The End Game

I truly hope the British electorate are watching this disaster unfold and appreciate what an opportunity they have to rid themselves of this undemocratic hegemony.

Re: The End Game

One can understand the perceived need for and the genuine concerns re trust if you look at what previous Greek administrations promised to deliver but consistently failed to do in their entirety. More to the point, the Syriza led government came to power promising to dismantle many of the reforms th...

I obviously don't have your depth of experience and all seeing wisdom, Phillip.

Note to self, must try better..

Re: Greece Referendum

Phillip, Some years ago I was in the car with a Greek friend and we watched as some idiot drove straight through a Stop sign and nearly mowed down a motorbike coming the other way. I asked him, "Why do Greeks consistently ignore Stop signs?" Smiling, he turned to me and replied, "If i...

Re: Greece Referendum

When all else fails send in Dora! "There is concern among opposition parties in Greece that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras may not be willing to do what it takes to reach a deal with creditors. New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis has sent two of the parties senior politicians, former minis...

Re: Greece Referendum

So, is this really the end or, to paraphrase Churchill, just the end of the beginning? The Eurogroup's stance has publicly hardened since Tsipras had the audacity to call a referendum. Unbelievably, the Greek delegation allegedly went back to Brussels yesterday without a coherent plan to present to ...

Re: Greece Referendum

Just after Alexis Tsipras made his pitch to the European Parliament, he was rebuked in furious fashion by Guy Verhofstadt, the president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. "Show you are a real leader and not a false prophet," he told Mr Tsipras. What he said to Tsipras w...

Re: Greece Referendum

Does the geopolitical and strategic position of Greece not give Tsipras a stronger hand after the No vote? The one player as yet sitting on the sidelines is the good old US of A. They maybe don't give a toss about Greece per se but they certainly do care about the Middle East, the Med, the Russian B...

Re: Greece Referendum

I agree with Clio, this is a milestone and something to be celebrated. The Greeks maybe had nothing to lose ie damned if they do, damned if they don't but they took the brave and courageous decision today. What's more it's a wake up call to the EU bully boys in Brussels that democracy still has an i...

Re: Greece Referendum

Europe will have to listen. The people in Italy, Portugal and Spain have witnessed the Greek vote. They too hate the EU imposed austerity. The problem for the bankers, political suits and unelected lackeys is an Italian or Spanish default would bring the whole thing crashing down. The markets will s...

Re: Tsipras: Europe at Crossroads

The sanctions (but more so the drop in the oil price) have devalued the Ruble and the Russian economy has stalled with negative GDP numbers this year and next if oil does not recover. I'm guessing those who think sanctions will work are hoping the man in the street will blame Putin for the job loses...

Re: Tsipras: Europe at Crossroads

John / Loretta9 Putin is damned if he appears to be forcing Ukraine to his ways and he is also damned if a sovereign country, Greece, chooses to seek/accept assistance from Russia ???? Greece, their government and indeed their people claim they want to remain within the EU. The EU has sanctioned Rus...
