What are "skneepa"?

There'a a kind of tiny fly here that is silent, diaphanous and bites with a sharp sting, at nights. Not a mosquito. The locals call them "skneepa". Does anyone know their Latin or English name? I can't even find an image to share, as they seldom perch for long. Much smaller than mosquitoes.

GuyM, Xerokambos is lovely, as is its clay cliff. However, it has been badly eroded by humans digging the atomaceous clay out to use to "clay-bathe" as you put it. The last time I went there, there were signs up asking the public NOT to remove the clay, to conserve the area. It's bad enoug...
