Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Anyone worrying about the current availabliity of free healthcare in Greece via reciprocal arrangement with the UK NHS post Brexit is making a big assumption that free healthcare in the UK will continue. Brexit or no Brexit the Tories already have plans going back to at least 2011 to dispose of this...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

The UK has always been a bad democracy based on a class system propped up by Royal privileges where there is no written constitution to protect citizens. I see that Channel 4 has been threatened by the UK government this morning who they rely on for funding, for not doing as they are told. The Briti...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Thanks for that Tim, it is certainly an argument I have heard quite a lot. It begs the question that if everyone breaks the law with impunity then what is the point of having laws? Incidentally all U.K. referendums are advisory only, it is politics and a compliant media that has propelled the EU ref...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Not very democratic, I would suggest. Tim I would suggest that not holding a confirmatory referendum is undemocratic in light of the lies told during campaigning, the electoral laws broken and use of what is known as dark money from unknown sources that funded the referendum. We now know without do...

Re: State pension inequality

53bn quid for something that was not mentioned/ included in their manifesto 3 days ago. Suddenly, after Thursday's QT, it emerges - they were struggling to justify the sums already pledged, now this. Have a read of this that might help explain why the money available to spend on public services is ...

Re: Minoan Ferry

It has been going for a while now and looks like a cargo only service, certainly cannot see it to book on their web page and it is quite a small ship. Have no idea which port it goes to but it certainly does not head out to sea on same route as the overnight Piraeus ferries and seems to hug the coas...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

In the U.K. most youngster are not ‘engaged’ in politics at all! Very true but they can be if encouraged to do so such as during 2014 Scottish Independence referendum where schools held debates, discussions and filled the Glasgow SSC Hydro to question politicians in the run up to the vote. https://...

Ditto too. Maybe 16 and 17 year olds should get to vote as its their future. They should learn how it works and change things. Probably why they don't get to.

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

After a battle some/all of these accounts were reinstated but it illustrates what power the owners of the social media platforms have. Also shows the extent government will go to try and control the media. There are many independent sites, online blogs and online news video channels out there with ...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Er, permission to comment please. News, is news. All stations purporting to present the news, try to get the latest. So something dramatic happens: everyone reports it. So your point is....? Ha ok, the point is who decides what is important and more importantly what is not being reported. The inter...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

have you got a link to the source of this bit about the funding from the licence fee ?... It is not direct funding, that would be open to criticism. As with many things in the U.K. transparency of government is not a strong point. Some consider the choice of new Westminster Speaker was driven by hi...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

On run-up to the election I found this interesting fact, that ITV news is funded by the BBC license fee and that their news comes from the same major news suppliers. As BBC funding is within the gift of the Tory government to grant or withdraw it is worth knowing how controlled the media is, especia...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

I’m struck by the high level of democracy in the U.K. My point is that we should not be complacent about what makes our country democratic. It is all too easy to relax into the institutions and recent history that we identify with as being British such as Aunt Beeb, the Queen, the NHS and the most ...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Have just read a piece in the Guardian today that should be a red warning to any country that calls itsef a democracy. We are heading into an election with our media blanket covered by just three ( soon to be two? ) multi billionaires who do not live in the UK yet have their newspapers read out thro...

https://apple.news/A1fi2g1_DQjaA7HMGT6Wyqg Got to agree with Warwick don't post someone else's work without saying what you think. I'll tell you what I think though. I just read this link you gave....it is without question a piece of utter nonsense littered with selective historical opinion and the...
