Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Appears to be a second rat. Nice bit of reporting from Bloomberg; https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-08-22/merkel-didn-t-give-johnson-30-days-to-fix-brexit-backstop The author talks about the recent coverage in the UK press about Merkel giving the UK 30 days to find a solution. In respo...

Re: Common Travel Area (UK, Ireland)

Still, it gives you a way - a slow way to be sure - to get back into the EU. You can move to Ireland, because of the CTA. So you go there, do the five years, get Irish citizenship, you're in. Other countries, you need a job I would think to be allowed to live there - maybe the job doesn't work out, ...

Common Travel Area (UK, Ireland)

From the Evening Standard, today; https://news.yahoo.com/brexit-news-latest-free-movement-191758567.html?guccounter=1 Free movement between the UK and Ireland will not end in the event of a no-deal Brexit, No10 has confirmed. The CTA means citizens of the UK and Ireland (as in Southern) can move and...

Re: I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Looking at amalgamating all these general BR comments threads to form the next long running thread markII (there you go Toebs!). Well, it did seem a sensible, even inexorable arrangement; where the subject is so big, and affects so many things, it's going to be popping up all over the place, unless...

I smelled a rat, and I found a rat

Yesterday the Telegraph claimed a poll it commissioned with ComRes showed 54% of people were in favour of Mr. Johnson proroguing Parliament so Brexit could happen. I smelled a rat. I then thought about it, and it seemed obviously wrong - 48% of people voted Remain, that number has risen both due to ...

Re: A TINY glimmer of hope

Bit off topic but just been looking at the Isle of Man, it’s amazing what a tiny island can achieve Everything is easier when you're small or very small. One of the great achievements of the USA is that it has advanced to wealth with a population of a few hundred million people. , not in the eu not...

Re: Frm the BBC

It was Nigel Farage who said that anyone in the civil service or armed forces who do not believe in Brexit should be sacked. God help us if he ever got into power. And in recent times in the USA independent research performed by State agencies, where it conflicts with the official line of, say, glo...

Re: Frm the BBC

Toebs: I do so dislike this civil service bashing! You said 'Because the Civil Service is becoming political, and it is forbidden to release information which goes against the view of the Government?' Quite: it is FORBIDDEN TO RELEASE INFORMATION - that doesn't mean it is politicised. It may be bei...

Frm the BBC

From the BBC, from Conor Burns MP, International Trade Minister; https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-49263295 "I think the only question is do we get that deal before the 31st of October or do we get a comprehensive free trade agreement after the 31st of October," he added. Holy Jes...

Re: Dominic Raab on today

BBC report Gove now saying "no-deal is now the default position". Seems like an almost literally overnight change in Johnson's election promise to renegotiate the exit deal? The mis-named "loyalty pledge" troubles me deeply. You can be in the Cabinet as long as you think the righ...

Re: Reminder

We all have our opinions and the ability to express them strongly yet clearly and objectively is something which we have now lost. No. This is not an accurate characterization. The majority and I would say the large majority of people in the thread were polite and respectful, always. If they were i...

Re: Reminder

I may be wrong, but in general Internet debate on non-trivial matters is typically extremely angry. The thread was in my experience unprecedentedly civil. The thread itself for me, in terms of content, was invaluable. In any matter, the insight of others is invaluable in helping correct and develop ...

Re: The Will of the People

All those people who have voted Tory in past elections can’t complain. This is the limited-choice problem. I have a gun. You may now either give me your wallet or your phone. It's the same with voting. You can vote Tory or Labour (or LibDem or Green, but they've never mattered) and now this means y...
