Thanks, Filippos. I think I've seen the second one before, but hadn't come across the first one.

I actually found the site to be quite user friendly and very visually appealing. I wish there was something similar for Chania/west Crete, because it looks like an easy to navigate, one-stop place to get a lot of really good info.

I think I'm going to find myself very much in the same situation soon. I've spent just about a year here in western Crete, but will be returning to the US at the end of May because there's really no way for me to make a viable living here at this time. Every time I see the beautiful sea or mountains...

A good, temporary, free substitute is the large size plastic water bottle that you'll see discarded everywhere. Fill with hot (not boiling) water and make sure the top is sealed. Wouldn't have thought of that...thanks! And yes, I imagine making sure the top is secure would make a big difference in ...

Hot Water Bottles

Do they sell them here in Crete? Any suggestions as to where I should look for one? I don't think I've come across them at Inka or CarreFour. I don't have central heat in the house that I'm renting, so I'm looking for this to supplement the gas heater that I have, something to snuggle up with under ...

Thanks, Brian...I'm definitely into wine and will keep an eye out for this. Another really nice "sticky", or sweet wine, is Boutari's 2005 Vinsanto from Santorini, although I have yet to see it for sale in Crete. Lighter style, with orange and tea notes...heavenly:-) Also best served chill...

Snow in Omalos?

Does anyone know if they've got any right now? I'm thinking of spending a couple days there towards the end of next week, with the explicit purpose of seeing a little snow, but don't want to rent a car and make hotel reservations if there is no white stuff.

I keep my outer gate locked when I'm home, as well as the front door now. I suppose there's nothing stopping someone from climbing over the wall and then breaking a window...unfortunately my cats are completely useless as guard animals and I wouldn't know what to do with a gun even if I had one! Kin...

Women Participating in the Epiphany Ceremony?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100107/od_nm/us_cross_girl Granted this story is about an Albanian girl, but they mention that it's become more common in Greece, too. If it was me personally, I'd let the boys keep the diving into freezing water for themselves and I'd ask instead that it be acceptable ...

Since I just moved here in June of 2009, EVERYTHING about Crete has been a new discovery to me, and most of it pretty wonderful. However, if I had to pick one thing I guess it would be the discovery of Tamam Taverna in Chania's old town. Typical taverna fare is great comfort food, but I like the div...

Ann - the best person to consult would be a veterinarian who is knowledgeable regarding the various procedures and requirements. There's a lot of confusing and conflicting information out there, but you're definitely going to have to have some sort of medical check/records regardless of where you're...

Not from Canada, but from the US (I brought 2 cats) and I know a woman who has traveled from Canada to Greece with her elderly cat.
