A farmer friend who spends part of the year on Crete reckons that a very large percentage of the chemicals on sale in the agricultural supply shops here used to be used in the UK but have been totally banned by EU regulations for many years because they are so dangerous. Warwick[/quote] What a surpr...

Are you sure about that? All of our 'waste' goes into a soakaway. Probably highly illegal in the EU context, but that's how it works. The big round concrete thing with a concrete top and no bottom (no jokes please!). That's the soakaway.

Νot a single incandescent anywhere in the house. Warwick The only incandescent here is me when utilities pack up with no warning, no explanation, no apology and usually quite a long wait. OTE did however pull up their socks the other day. It took them just 72 hours after my reporting an outage...

To be honest, I don't know any Kiwis living in the west end of the island at the moment. As to pensions, your own government can probably give you better advice. Don't forget, you are not members of the EU, so there are lots of benefits around that you may not be entitled to. Whether your pension wi...

[ I must admit being an ex squaddie I never had much faith in any "expat" community. They were usually all retired ex Colonels and Majors who insisted on using their ranks when retired]

Not many of those around in Crete old chap! The odd flying officer Blimp but that's about it.

PAYPAL

For martin p. You said "I have two Paypal accounts " and I noticed that you are UK based, but coming to Apokoronas (if not already arrived). Be careful with your paypal accounts. I opened one here and ran it trouble-free until my UK credit card details needed updating - new expiry date. Bi...

The thing is Anthony, that people moving here from elsewhere generally do bring their attitudes with them. This is further compounded by a tendency to huddle together, either physically or 'on line' in national or ethnic groupings. Not for nothing is Kokkino Horio called "Mikri Anglia"! Wh...

Try giving Kassie Vlazaki a ring. She was the architect/engineer for our house and she has a finger in many building pies. Her numbers are 6944336943 or office 28210 57846. If you ring her, tell her Mr Bob from Kokkino Horio has given you her number. We don't get commission, but it will help to focu...

To Part Time Skopi Resident. In my experience, I have had to declare the tax I paid on interest paid into my Greek accounts, and there has been a very marginal adjustment to take account of the different percentages of tax levied. Not worth worrying about unless you have something in the top range o...

OTE work

Paul. Are you able to explain what is going with OTE and all the trench digging? It appears to be to do with fibre optics, but one of the locals in the village says they are also laying an ISDN cable. We have seen a large black 'sleeve' as it were which I imagine could house the fibre-optic cable to...
