I don't think the guarantee of €100,000/£85,000 is worth the web site it is written on. I think it is pretty certain that the next time a major bank goes bust there will be a massive bail-in of savings including those within the guarantee limit. I fear you're absolutely right, Warwick, as this rece...

An interesting choice of illustration, Clio, especially as that particular track is about a boy whose parents are trying to bring him up as a girl and refuse to accept he's a boy!

I suppose, even in English, they'd refer to him as 'she'.

Hi Warwick

Is that excluding any service charges? I get billed in Sitia every quarter but it's always between 18 and 20 Euros and I'm only resident 3 weeks of the year.

(Or is my neighbour tapping my supply to top up his swimming pool?!)

My guess would be that the property tax is here to stay. This year, next year and every year to come. Permanent.

Yes, I believe that's correct. Introduced to pay for a long-ago war if I remember right. Of course, you could argue that as a country we've been almost permanently at war with somebody or other ever since.

Sorry, been away for a few days - I think a major concern is the imposition of capital controls. It would only take a minor crisis in the banking system (and you get the feeling that's never far away in Europe in general and the Med in particular) for these to be put in place. Then, not only would i...

Thanks for that, Warwick.

Like I said, worrying. I can think of several scenarios as Greece/Crete moves forward that may well involve house owners, myself included, having to walk away from their investments for good.

The Natural History Museum in Heraklion has an earthquake simulator - head over there if you wish to experience one. I've been on the earthquake simulator - it's an experience not to be missed, although I can't imagine such an apparatus being allowed in a Health & Safety concious country like t...

It might also be of help to the estimated 30% of Cretan ex-pat residents currently trying to sell their Cretan idylls so they can return to the UK! Jon This is a suprising figure, Jon. Any idea where it comes from? Worrying too, if the market is saturated with homes that won't sell - prices should,...
