Brexit

bobscott raises an interesting point (in another thread): If you are from the UK, sign as many petitions as you can to keep GB in 'Europe'. If the GB pulls out, then the ordure will really hit the fan! Would anybody care to hazard a guess at some of the implications for British ex-pats and holiday h...

Re: TROIKA wins.

The level of apathy concerning the election does not surprise me at all, as I'm sure the Greek people know that by previously voting to remain in the Single Currency, they will now be subject to another endless round of same old, same old. Whoever wins this election is unlikely to be able to stick t...

Re: The Next Government?

The question remains though:

Will any party, or combination of parties, possess the political will and capability to carry out the austerity program as demanded by the Eurogroupe?

I've seen no evidence over the past few years to suggest that this will be the case.

Re: Bye bye Tsipras

I think what is really telling throughout the whole negotiating process is that the difference between what Syriza was proposing and what the creditors wanted, in terms of €X billion was very small. Allowing Greece to execute its plan and seeing what the outcome would be would have had negligible e...

Re: Bye bye Tsipras

He was elected on an anti austerity package. But this was a clear unambiguous offer by Tsipras to the Greek people - ANTI AUSTERITY .. they voted for that. Incorrect. You are being selective with the facts. The mandate was 1. Anti-austerity and 2. Remaining in the single currency. As has been point...

Re: Transferring proceeds of villa sale

In addition, my lawyer has advised that objective values no longer apply - the price declared is the actual sale price. If that is correct, will it not have a significant effect upon the Capital Gains Tax the seller is liable for? I understood the CGT was calculated on the difference between the ov...

Re: Transferring proceeds of villa sale

If he has last year's property tax bill* it contains the objective value of the property so he would at least know what it is. Interesting. Is this the objective value that pertained the last time the property changed hands - i.e when the current owner purchased it - or is it the current objective ...

Oh Lor'. It was the heat made me do it.

That must be nice.

No emoticon for 'deep sigh'

Re: Anyone Else For A (Velvet) Grexit?

To a large extent its law making process, through the mechanism of Directives, works reasonably well and is largely directed at improving the single market, i.e. removing barriers to trade. I agree with you, Warwick, up to a point. I was always an enthusiastic proponent of the EU when its ethos was...

Re: Anyone Else For A (Velvet) Grexit?

Ms Coppola's article seems to be a fair and accurate summing up of the current state of play. It's funny (or would be if it wasn't so sad) that all these countries that have signed up to the pan-european ideal of togetherness, in the end, make decisions based upon national interest. With these natio...

PLAN B

Seems like there was a Plan B after all. It reads like an espionage novel - with the rather unlikely figure of Norman Lamont as the dashing hero.
