Re: The American Oar

An oar might not help. The truth is that the "powers that be" see Greece as "rocking the boat" and, if it can't be stopped, the best solution is EU excommunication (in their eyes) so they can concentrate their efforts on keeping the other EU members subdued via austerity. Agreed...

The American Oar

I see the Americans have now stuck their oar into the Greece/EZ drama - either to apply pressure or stir the pot - who knows. Legendary investor Warren Buffet has opined that a Greek exit will, far from damaging the global economy, actually be a good and positive move for the Eurozone. Funnily enoug...

Re: More of the Game (or Game Over?)

I'd be a little surprised if all the members of the members of the EZ didn't have stockpiles of new national currencies warehoused just in case. The fragility of the single currency is hardly a secret - economically it's been dead in the water for a long time - it's only the politics surrounding 'Th...

Re: Gamesmanship

...You do have to have a tv licence if you own a television receiving device - it's the law... Not quite accurate. It is an offence to receive live broadcast without a TV licence. It is not illegal to own a TV without one. The people, I use the term loosely, who attempt to enforce the law do tend t...

Re: Gamesmanship

That same BBC - one of the worlds leading private companies - sending seriously threatening letters (licencing authority) to homes with no TV licence - despite the fact you no more have to have a TV licence than having to buy cannabis. Loretta, old chap. Several points. The BBC isn't a private comp...

I believe you owe us all a euro each, mouche. There are currently 2508 members registered on the forum. That turned out to be an expensive bet. :(

https://hat4uk.wordpress.com/2015/03/29/greece-breaking-syriza-cabinet-in-emergency-session-as-greeceeu-relations-close-to-breaking-point/ You get the sense that push is finally starting to approach shove . Syriza have played a poor hand, in my opinion. They gave away their main bargaining chip ear...

Re: Gamesmanship

Cosying up to Moscow might be part of the 'game' but my guess is that it is just a gambit. Given that the EU has always been suspected to be a structure supported and underpinned by the USA Fed to create a global trading block and currency baulk against Russia and China, I would guess that the 'endg...

Re: Tourists as Undercover Tax Inspectors

I don't think it's a made-up story as such - it was widely reported that it is a government proposal but the 'joke' aspect of it is its utter silliness and the remote likelihood that it will either happen or work. I certainly don't think the troika are going to take it seriously as part of Greece's ...

Re: Tourists as Undercover Tax Inspectors

I agree that this "story" is so off the wall that it must be a spoof, right? But bearing in mind that it first appeared in the Financial Times at the end of last week, why hasn't the Greek government issued a denial, if it's untrue? As we used to say in the news trade, if you let a story ...

Re: Tourists as Undercover Tax Inspectors

The Slog https://hat4uk.wordpress.com/2015/03/08/greece-crisis-did-troika2-doctor-the-latest-leaked-varoufakis-recommendations/ reckons the whole thing is a fake, nothing to do with Varoufakis but a clever bit of dirty trickery. I have to say the same thought had occurred to me: it's just too ludic...

Re: Coming to Crete to retire next year

a joint venture, buying renovation projects and flipping them once refurbished, is not out of the question. Hi Alan I think, alas, it probably is out of the question. There simply is virtually no housing market in Crete at the moment and that is likely to be the case (in my opinion) for many years ...

........... I picked up a virus from this link. Suggest proceed with caution. I'd followed the link before I saw your post, Tim. I wasn't connected to any other sites except this and the linked one. In view of your comment I immediately ran my AV and malware programs, neither of which detected anyt...
