They've assured other EZ/EU countries that Cyprus is a 'one off' and under no circumstances will it ever be applied to other banking systems.

So that's all right then.

Yes, and all those millions which returned to Greek banks in the last few months will be disappearing again, what with this and the Cyprus bailout. Carolina, I'm not even sure it matters what happens in Greece anymore as far as the Euro is concerned. Economically, Greece has been a 'dead man walkin...

According to our accountant however, in order to avoid the need to go through the rigmarole of generating pink slips (or paying tax on non-existent income) property owners now need to provide a certificate of tax residence from HMRC (preferably translated into Greek). That's interesting rej because...

been bitten by a feisty Balkan whip snake Paul, I should imagine that if I were bitten by a Balkan whip snake, feisty or otherwise, I'd drop dead of a horror-induced heart attack - it wouldn't need to be venomous. Joking aside, I think I'm right in saying there's a highly venomous viper native to C...

Hi Valerie

I wouldn't worry too much about snake protection - my understanding is there's only four species of snake on Crete and none of them harmful to humans.

SCORPIONS on the other hand, are a completely different kettle of psaree. Do not get me started on scorpions ....... !

Hi Filippos Thanks for that, although I don't think I've ever seen an IN.KA in Sitia (sure somebody will point me in the right direction if that's wrong). Certainly in Halkidakis (Spar), Lidl and Ariadne's toiletries are horribly expensive. Have to say that ditching the suitcase once I'd got everyth...

Re: What to bring

I may be wrong but i there not a restriction on flying with any sort of liquid which I have been told includes toothpaste. In our experience full ranges of toiletries are available and being near to Ierapetra with in excess of 20 Pharmacies (at the moment) no need for the basics like plasters etc. ...

Hi John Others may disagree, (and I can't speak for the western part of the island) but in my experience the south-eastern coast, due to the topography and the fact it faces North Africa, can become unbearably hot in the summer and, again, certainly in the South East, water shortages are not uncommo...

Not sure, Jeff - you probably know that everything in the forces either has a nickname or an acronym (or both). I think it's something to do with with the Arsenal (Woolwich rather than Wenger & Co), arsenal being an ammunition store, but that might be an old wive's tale (which also abound in the...

Hi Filippos

Good advice - to be honest I hadn't noticed it was a UK site - I had it in my mind that it was Spanish for some reason! I'll drop them a line.

Tim

PS. I sold my ammo boots for a goodly sum of money when I left the forces. Shiny boots = good investment!

Interesting debate Warwick and Jon. I too picked up on the final para of the vitrfication site and although it sounds like a professional process, I'm not sure that a sealant wouldn't do pretty much the same job; it reduces the porosity thus allowing the application of a high gloss finish. What I co...

Hi Chaps Many thanks for your prompt replies: Stuart/Jo, I'll keep an eye out for that logo - they seem to distrubute acros the EU. Jeff, I know that shop - I'll have a word with the brothers when I'm over in April. Roussa, hadn't thought of Papanikolo - if Hadzakis can give me a product name I'll a...

No MacDonalds in Sitia, Bob!

Nor Burger King, Goody's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Fish 'n' Chips, English Themed Pubs, Irish Themed Pubs ........ etc, etc. Can't get a pint of Watney's Red Barrel anywhere.

Hallelujah,
Praise the Lord.

I went into McDonalds yesterday for a burger. The lad behind the counter asked me if I wanted anything on my burger. I gave it a moment's thought and replied "I'll have a fiver each way, please."

:D
