The only way forward for any country that's broke is to grow its economy. Period. I can't see any way that Greece can do this while it is constantly having to go to the Germans et al with a begging bowl, and keep implementing savage cuts to its ability to function as a working Western economy. The c...

Hi Warwick Yes, I see where you're coming from. However I'm thinking and hoping that the phrase in the heading of Q2 supercedes the 10 rules that follow. The cost of living is not applied to the individuals that spend less than 183 days in Greece ( no tax resident) and they have no income in Greece....

Hi Kathleen That's interesting (and slightly worrying) info. I believe the imputed income was based on house size - and in my case the amount I was required to transfer every year was 5000 Euros. Obviously everyone's individual circumstances are different, but if I instead transferred only enough to...

Hi Mixos If it's any help, I'm in the same position as you are; however on my last trip to the island my accountant assured me that the 'pink slip/fund transfer' for non tax-residents has been abolished. This thread may help: http://www.livingincrete.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=5895 Although it's easy...

Yet another article http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-2180551/Government-guarantee-credit-card-spending-Britons-Greece-hit-euro-exit.html An interesting article, but would this be strictly necessary? Granted, it's widely expected that the banks would close for a few days given an orde...

I'm sure Kilkis is right. The whole Eurozone project was doomed from the start. The 'rules' for successful Optimal Currency Areas (OCA's) are taught in 'A' level Economics and the first rule is you need politcal union between the participating states before monetary union can take place - not the ot...

Pulling The Plug?

Did anyone see the thought-provoking article in today's Ekathimerini? http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_wsite3_1_22/07/2012_453217 Looks to me as though the troika are going to offer Greece 'take it or leave it' terms on the bailout and are positioning themselves to pull the plug on Gree...

Yes, that makes sense Paula. There was a delay in collecting the money in my case as well - the direct debit was set up with a 100 euro limit on withdrawals which caused a problem.

Heigh-ho, look forward to several, many or more tax bills in the coming year!

I'm afraid I've rather lost track of how this tax collection is meant to work. I've recently returned from a trip to the island and, whilst there, picked up my latest electricity bill only to find that about two thirds of the tax they collected last year had been refunded without explanation. Not co...

Hi Cashey The car hire reps wait outside or just inside the 'Arrivals' door holding up notices with your name on, although you need to note that there are two separate 'Arrivals' doors. They will either take you across the road to the hire car compound or will have your car ready on the road outside...

Update on Pink Slip Question

Hi all Have just returned from a brilliant week on the island. The advice I was given here regarding the change in the law on assumed income for non-residents was spot-on. However, it might be worth noting for non-resident home owners that the cessation of the liability to transfer funds annually, a...

Just Now Over Here!

Just now on the Worcestershire/Herefordshire borders it's ten degrees, grey, miserable, it's rained non-stop for the last 24 hours (genuinely) and the forecast is more of the same for the rest of the month.

Counting the days to my next trip to Crete (14)!

Tim
