Re: VPN

Norton Security (Symantec) are currently plugging their VPN to their subscribers because of the so-called KRACK security flaw which has just been discovered to attack almost any device that uses wifi -- that's just about everything, right?! That's the bad news. The good news is that KRACK does not a...

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

The word I was searching for was, indeed, Laiki, Warwick and I'm happy to say that my Greek has come on a bit since then and I've not made that mistake again. I accept that the words are not that similar, so I didn't even have the excuse a friend had when she introduced her daughter as her cucumber....

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

Once, during our early days in Crete, I hoped to impress our elderly neighbour, Georgos, who appeared to be waiting for a lift, by asking him in Greek if he was on the way to the market. I remembered that the word started with "L" and ended in "i" "Kalimera Georgo, sto Lekan...

Re: Organ donation in Greece

Blood donors in the UK have a blood sample tested at every donation, for CJD, HIV, Hepatitis, inside leg measurement ... ok not that, but just about every nasty virus known to mankind, so I would imagine that the Greek blood donation service does the same. In the UK the donation is not used on NHS p...

Re: Greek Lessons or Books

This BBC book with CDs is as good a place as any to start, Alan. I found it a bit heavy on the grammar, but once you get into it, it's a pretty good teach-yourself way to begin and the CDs help with the phonetics.

Re: New National Road

The answer to your last question, Bob, is No! The elevated section to bypass Xamezi sits exactly as it has done for the past 5? 8? years, although work either side of it has finished with a lovely new blacktop surface that nobody can drive on. So many rumours have "explained" the delay in ...

Re: Flying to Chania at Easter

I'm a great fan of easyJet, Paula, and fly with them several times a year to/from Gatwick/Bristol to Athens/Heraklion, so if you have only experienced Ryanair so far, you should be pleasantly surprised by easyJet! Also, they have just released their Spring schedules and tickets, so you might grab a ...

Re: Mosquitoes

Good advice from altohb about the flour weevils and I agree that they seem to be in the bags when bought, as airtight bags and boxes alone don't seem to stop the problem. As for fly bites, Warwick, somebody told me that these small Cretan flies are not actually biting but regurgitating formic acid, ...

Re: Buying a car in Crete

You were lucky, Peter. It was the other way round with us. When we bought a new car from the Hyundai dealership in Agios Nikolaos we had to hand over the entire price up front "so that they will release the car from the store in Athens..."! For a while I did wonder if we would ever see the...

Re: How do I get to Chania at Xmas?

I would endorse all the comments above, Paula, especially filippos's suggestion that you book both legs with Aegean/Olympic if you can. Flight delays to/from Athens/UK are fairly commonplace in the winter months and if, say, Ryanair or easyJet cause you to miss the Athens-Crete connection it can get...

Re: Property Tax 2017

No, I think you have been paying half the full amount, not paying twice. We have always had two bills -- one each for my wife and myself -- which together add up to the amount due on the property. I don't know whether being married makes any difference, maybe it depends on whether the house is in jo...

Re: Know Your Customer (KYC)

Your experience with Alpha bank sounds wearisome, Warwick. I went through the same KYC process with Eurobank earlier this year and it was a very short and friendly meeting, in which I handed over the paperwork that you itemise. I am a non-Greek tax resident and the only proof of pension that I gave ...

Re: Top up mobile phones from bank account?

You don't say which network you are with, Alan, but as Kathleen, Warwick and altohb all confirm, you can definitely use a Greek bank debit card to top up a pay-as-you-go mobile with Vodafone Greece by setting up an online account. You used to be able to keep your credit for six months, but that's no...
