It's hard to know how to react to this. Are Cretans really more cruel to animals than are Greeks in all other areas except Attica, or is it that there is more and better reporting of incidents, perhaps due to high levels of tourism? It's difficult to understand how the island of filoxenia, where fri...

Thanks, both of you. I remember now that we have to wait for the "tax portal" to open (what a bonkers system) but couldn't recall if it happens this month or next.

Car Tax advance payment

Apologies if this has been answered before, but can anyone tell me the date from which you can pay car tax for the following year? I know the deadline is December 31st, but can it be paid any time before then or only, for example, during the month of December?

I can only assume Moggieman has wings... of course you have to drive into and out of Ancona to catch the ferry. The port is smack bang in the middle of town unless it's moved in the last two years! Kilkis is right, that when you get to the ferry terminal, all is well laid out and clear and the the d...

I agree with Jet -- Ancona is a horrible place to get in and out of and there always seem to be traffic jams on the port road. One time, as we stood on the upper deck watching the ramp being raised for departure, a car raced at high speed towards the ship, screeching to a halt at the last moment. Th...

BST, you need to badger your accountant on Monday, as the ENFIA demands are all available now; in fact, the tax computer network crashed briefly on Wesnesday morning because so many people were trying to access it. The queue outside the National Bank in Sitia this morning suggested that many people ...

Agree with Tim re. Spinalonga and Diktean Cave (you can also get boats to Spinalonga from Plaka, which is a shorter crossing) and if you are coming out here to the Wild East your friends might want to visit the palm beach at Vai -- again, a bit touristy but as it's the only natural palm forest in Eu...

I can put in a good word for Eurobank in Sitia ... (I am assuming you live somewhere round here as you say you are at the "wrong end of Crete.") They have helpful and friendly staff and will print you off a pink (white) transfer slip on demand (no carbon paper in sight) plus the ATM outsid...

Went to my accountant today expecting to get the final figure and was told adjustments are still being made, so would I come back on the 24th when he will definitely have the amount owing. "It may be more or it may be less..." Can't fault the logic!

I agree with the sentiments expressed by Eleni13, Cruc and Jet.. but to get back to Essem's original post, there was a case of mass poisoning at this end of the island of dogs already in a secure pound. They weren't wandering around the streets pooing, "threatening" anyone or worrying shee...

Well they've been bringing charter flights in all summer from Holland and, I think possibly Belgium and France, and I've heard that the new terminal is fully kitted out and ready to use. Still waiting to hear if the rumours are true that Ryanair is planning a summer schedule from Stansted to Sitia!

When they were water-bombing the fire up near Handras a few weeks ago the helicopter was scooping up water From Sitia Bay perilously close to bathers along the beach. Perhaps that was also to keep away from the windiest part of the bay, but we did wonder if we'd see some poor hapless swimmer waving ...

To be fair to Mike, I have seen Ierapetra incorrectly spelt as Lerapetra a number of times over the years .. in guide books, on leaflets etc .. and had assumed it was an 'alternative' spelling or an incorrect translation. Maybe Mike's finger trouble was caused by similar sightings?

Yes, I feel I must speak up in support of "our" end of Crete, like John and Jeff.. I can't believe that property in the Chania area, with so many more ex-pats than, say, Sitia, is going to be cheaper. There are plenty of working villages up this end and, as for the broadband, we get a fast...
