Hmm.. I'm with Hudson on this. Sounds extremely dodgy and with the benefit of hindsight it might have been a good idea to ask for ID .. (no, I probably wouldn't have done so either!) A fairly similar thing happened to a friend. At the very least I would check with the police in Chania and ask if the...

You know what, somehow I knew Kilkis would have the answer. But what's it all about, Al?

You are correct, Eleni. Cars with the latest TSI petrol engines, for example, are every bit as fuel efficient as diesels and, model for model, are cheaper to buy. Buyers should also factor in recent proposals by several countries (UK included) to impose extra charges in city centres on some diesel v...

No, I'm not certain that the info is correct Warwick, and I'm happy to defer to your greater knowledge if it's not. The link says it was updated in February, so I assumed it was reliable. Perhaps the only way to get a definitive answer would be to ask someone at the tax office ... Good luck with tha...

My impression, having bought a new car in Crete last year, is that dealers are just grateful to get any business at the moment and yes, you can probably get a good deal depending on your negotiating skills. As for the best time to buy.. bear in mind that you will have to pay a full year's road tax a...

...Sounds like your gentleman on the wall might be a cousin of a character I encountered some years ago while walking in the badlands of Sphakia on the south coast. This bearded man-mountain appeared on the path in front of me carrying the most colossal weapon I have ever seen.. like a punt gun of t...

Just heard from our accountant with our ENFIA land tax assessment... It is almost half what we were paying under the old Property Tax. Seems too good to be true, so I'm waiting for another email to say it's a mistake. Anyone else had such a big cut, and any theories about the huge difference? :D

Warwick makes my point far more lucidly than I can, mouche. Yes, I can read speed limit signs -- where they exist and are actually readable -- but if you have to guess what the limit is at any given point on the road, because the signs aren't there or badly sequenced, then it can be quire difficult ...

But with all due respect to mouche and Jeff ... "the law" is an ass when it's not made clear ... and that seems to be the main point of this thread.

Wasn't this the place involved in a shoot out with the police some years back.. and now the police won't even set foot near it without paramilitary backup? Or am I mixing it up with another bit of bandit country?

There's a guy who runs a metal workshop in Achladia. I've not seen his work but I'm told he does gates etc. I don't have a name or number but the workshop is about 400m after you pass the village sign (on the road from Piskokefalo) on the left hand side, just before a right hand bend in the road and...

Comments on the website link make some very fair points about obscured/faded/graffiti-daubed speed limit signs, not to mention the sheer impossibility of driving through the Vrachasi tunnel at 40 kph with the pick-up truck behind trying to climb into the boot... However, we followed a taxi on a stre...
