Re: Top up mobile phones from bank account?

You don't say which network you are with, Alan, but as Kathleen, Warwick and altohb all confirm, you can definitely use a Greek bank debit card to top up a pay-as-you-go mobile with Vodafone Greece by setting up an online account. You used to be able to keep your credit for six months, but that's no...

Re: Bad smell from sump pump

Frank's advice is good. The tracing dye is a good idea. Is there a drain pipe feeding into your sump pit or is it simply a pit that collects groundwater from the surrounding earth and rock? If you have a pipe feeding into the pit you need to check that you are not getting raw sewage in there from a ...

Re: Places to visit

Many years ago we visited the German War Cemetery at Maleme and as we walked round we passed an old man standing by one of the graves. He turned and spoke to us in German so I had to apologise in English for not understanding what he was saying. "Oh, you are English," he said, grasping my ...

If you ever venture this far east, Warwick, you could try the 20+ hairpins on the road from Xametoulo to Xerokambos .. but take the spare underwear

Re: Origins of Early Cretan Culture

Thanks for posting that, Warwick. Interesting, too, that the test sites were island-wide from Lassithi in the east, Armenoi in the west and Moni Odigitria in the south.

Thank you, Eleni. My use of this  emoticon was intended to signal that the post was lighthearted and not to be taken seriously. I thought it was pretty obvious. Ti na kanoume? There's another one for you !

Re: Greek Business

Can't speak for Andrew or Eleni, but my post was intended as a joke, Clio -- albeit a rather weak one -- and I'm pretty sure mouche has broad enough shoulders to comprehend that without feeling offended.

Nothing our end of the island, Tim. Just a faint wobble and not even as strong as the one last week, so your house will still be standing! M.

Re: Ballot papers

The postal poll card is what the Returning Officers send out to people registered as postal voters, about a month before the actual ballot papers are sent to them. (Well they do that in West Dorset anyway. Perhaps not all returning officers do so?) It's just a large postcard informing recipients tha...

Re: A Little Night Music

Interesting post, Clio. As Warwick says, Crete is on the Nightingales' migration route, so it's entirely possible that is what you have been hearing. It could be a Blackbird, as Bob says, as they sing after dark. A Nightjar is also possible, although I wouldn't describe their call as lovely and tril...

Re: Tax resident in Greece < 183 days ?

As I understand it, you can drive a car in Greece which is registered in any other country, for up to six months in a year, but the car must then be out of Greece for the other six months. In other words, you can't simply drive into Albania or get the ferry to Italy for a few days. I don't think it ...

Re: Vehicle Circualtion Tax - A Dire Warning

I still can't follow the logic of removing the plates if it is not to save circulation tax. What about all the hire cars -- without plates on --parked up in compounds awaiting the new season? Is that not a way for the owners to save tax, and if not, what's the point of removing them in the first pla...
