Re: Olive Harvest

It can vary from one olive grove to another just yards away, George .. all depending on the wind direction and -- crucially -- the amount of rain. Since you mention Kato Zakros, you might be aware that there was hardly a drop of rain in the "east end" all summer and autumn, but there were ...

Re: Visa Waiver System

The Mail isn't the only one to play this trick, Warwick. Today's Times has a front page headline that screams: "Tories split over Farage role in deal with Trump." A Cabinet row? Senior ministers involved? No, when you actually read the story this "split" consists of a Tory party ...

The Prime Minister and the Justice Secretary should have done this yesterday, without prompting:

Re: Round and Round We Go

How extraordinary. Brexiteers are squealing like stuck pigs because the High Court has upheld the sovereignty of Parliament. Are these not the same people who were demanding that we "take back control" throughout the referendum campaign?

Re: No Water

It happens, Blighty. They might be working on the pipes, or just cutting supplies because there's a general shortage all over the island. The taps will soon be running again. Always a good idea to have some bottled water for these eventualities.

Re: Capital Control Issues

... But surely most people selling property today will be taking a huge hit on the price they paid for it, therefore there will have been no gain, so no tax to pay? There might be various other sales/transaction taxes I suppose, but if you make a loss and no capital gain, there can be no "capit...

Re: Property Purchase

... Just seems to prove what I've been saying for years: for every accountant in Crete you will get a different version of what is required. I am in the same position as Danny, ie not resident for tax purposes in Greece and all tax due collected in another country. BUT, my accountant in Crete says a...

Re: Bonfires

I think that's right, although people in our neck of the woods don't seem to worry about setting the hillsides on fire as they've been cheerfully lighting fires for the past month or so.

Re: Lost dog ?

Looks like he's yours if you want him, peebee! This tends to happen around this time of year when the "hunting" season (aka rabbit shooting) begins, and all those macho boys in their camo trousers discover that the dogs don't always do as they are told. The answer: drive the dog to a villa...

Re: BT Internet email issues

Interesting post, David, as I started having problems this evening with my BTInternet/Yahoo email on my phone .. Very slow loading of incoming mail, the blue wheel of death going round and round etc. I wondered if it had anything to do with the mass hack of Yahoo accounts reported a week or so ago? ...

Re: Dual speed limit?

I'm talking about the National Road through the villages between Sitia and Ag Nik, fiippos, and never mind the big black agrotika .. It's me in a valve-bouncing Hyundai who's in the mood to shoulder them off the road !

Re: Dual speed limit?

You are lucky they are 60/50. They've been putting them up at this end of the island too, but mostly 50/40. Unfortunately the tourists in hire cars actually obey the signs, which makes the journey through the Lassithi villages even more tedious than usual.

Re: Water bill/rates

Any more clues here, Jason? Where in Crete? Name of the village perhaps? There are a great many villages with rivers and streams running through them, or close by. There's a spring in ours, just 100 meters away, but we pay water bills, so I'd be intrigued to know more ...

Re: Peanuts

Glad you found the peanuts, Daisy. The Eleanora's falcons are still around, as they are a late breeding species, so it will be a few weeks before they return to Madagascar for the winter. I'm told that they have established summer/autumn colonies on the three islands off Sitia. They are smaller than...
