Re: The Will of the People

Well that's it then. I'm cancelling my Porsche order and keeping the Hyundai. Dammit.

Re: Appalling weather

It wasn't too bad up the east end, DJ, although the monsoon-like rain was pretty relentless all day. The most spectacular sight, driving along the south coast road from Ierapetra, were the massive "lakes" of brown sludge fanning out into the sea from the ends of the gorges and rivers. It w...

Re: The Will of the People

The second episode, focusing on the Greek debt crisis, was broadcast last night and made riveting viewing. Yiannis Varoufakis described how Eurozone finance ministers "bamboozled" him into submission during the various crisis meetings. It brought to mind his warnings to Theresa May two yea...

Re: Any advice please on travelling with my cat

We took a cat the other way, Voni, (Heraklion/Athens/Heathrow) and she travelled as air cargo, so was automatically transferred to the London flight at Athens. However, you say the cats are travelling with you in the cabin. Is that on both legs of the journey or only Athens-Chania? I wasn't aware th...

Re: The Will of the People

It's a bit disingenuous to say "Westminster went against the result," Keltz. Although there was a small majority (51.6%) in favour of devolution, the rules enacted before the vote were that 40% of the TOTAL electorate had to vote "yes" and this threshold was not met. Cameron's bi...

Re: Holiday home insurance

You could try here, Sally: https://insurance-greece.com/insurance-services/home-insurance/ The company is run by Stavros, who is a member of this forum and would give you a quote. Your house will need a Certificate of Static Competence to verify that it's not about to fall down, and if you want eart...

Re: Eastern Crete

I would endorse everything that Guy, Maud and Warwick have written above, Amanda. The best advice, I think, would be to have a good look at the whole island before deciding where to settle. Our first visit was 43 years ago when we stayed in Malia, (then a pleasant fishing village, not the tourist he...

Re: Property Register declaration

And if you are closer to Sitia than Ag Nik, Yorgo, the registry office there is on the Piskokefalo Road, about 500m out of Sitia, on the opposite side of the road from the warehouse of Bidakis, the courier company.

Re: Property Register declaration

Thanks for clarifying that, Warwick. Just by way of an update, my accountant has sent me another email showing an example of the certificate. It does indeed have ΠΙΣΤΟΠΟΙΗΤΙΚΟ ΜΕΤΑΓΡΑΦΗΣ as a heading on a single sheet of paper, with four large franked "postage" stamps in the top right corn...

Re: Property Register declaration

Thanks for responding, Warwick. I'm only going by what my accountant said in his email, which was: Until, May, all owners who are resident abroad (and March for Greek residents) have to declare their real estate ( plot, land, building ) in the Cadastral Register ( properties register), the responsible...

Property Register declaration

I have received an email from our accountant about the Property Declaration (Cadastral Register) that everyone who owns a property in Greece is obliged to complete before March 2019 (or May 2019 for non-residents.) Apparently, in order to comply with the new register we have to produce three things:...

Re: The Will of the People

....unless the EU decides to give the UK more time. According to today's Times, a three-month extension to Article 50 is "under discussion in European capitals to allow time either for a second referendum or a Norway-style soft Brexit." Could just be more Brexit waffle, of course.
