Some info here:

Essentially it says there are no reef like corals in Europe as the water is too cold.

I hate the globalisation business models for the very reason they try to make every place the same. In Saudi they have their own burger place which sells lamb burgers - this is fine as it's their version of fast food. I go to Greece I want to eat Greek food and nothing else. I realise these are my f...

Whilst I view the closure of international fast food places as encouraging, I fear I am in the minority. However, are the Greeks or Cretan youths getting fatter? Scotland is now the second fattest nation in the world and it's easy to see why. The only exercise I see young people doing is a rigorous ...

Warwick, I think you mean lost it over the last few years. I have just found out that the ISA we had to take out to cover our mortgage shortfall is itself short, due to miscalculations over a period of three years. 4% in a Greek bank seems like heaven compared to here. I shouldn't really grumble tho...

Crete is a four hour flight for me, which doesn't thrill me as I hate flying. I will however gladly endure the horrors of package holiday travel to get there. When I arrive I have a two hour transfer to Plakias which I would quite happily do standing on my head. The reason - Crete - I love the Greek...

Here in Edinburgh today my wife had a 3 course chinese meal with wine for £10. Average cost of recent holiday meal in Symi 38 euro for two. 2009 in Paxos 14 euro for octopus starter - 5 star hotel in Edinburgh average £10 for a starter. ( both with lovely views ) Sister just returned from Rhodes was...

France is also generally a good bit cheaper than Greece as well. Eating out in Greece ( for tourists ) is a rather expensive business and I know quite a few people who have stopped going to Greece because of this. It's cheaper eating out in the UK than in Greece for instance. Sadly for the likes of ...

My wife and daughter both swear by Avon's skin so soft as a repellant. When I worked in the middle east alongside the US army, this was what a lot of these guys used. Also quite effective is the mosquito repellent app which you can download for free for android phones. Are you sure they're mosquitos...

If I had never visited Crete before I'm afraid this video wouldn't entice me. I thought I'd clicked on the wrong bit at first, and then the video centres on the performers as opposed to the island itself. Still, it's keeping a few people employed which can't be a bad thing.

I am sitting on my balcony, sipping an ouzo and looking out over the main harbour in Symi. All the yachts are moored up for the night and the lights reflect over the calm waters and continue up the hill, past the neo classical mansions towards the village. Having read the article, it sort of makes y...

On my first trip to Greece, some 30 odd years ago I flew to Athens and got a taxi to Piraeus. The sheer array of ferries and tickets available was mind boggling. I had no idea which island to go to and ended up following an elderly woman with a huge barrow of fruit and veg. Bought a ticket to "...

We always try to stay in the south of Crete when we go as it is far quieter which gives more opportunities to speak to the locals and generally meander about the place at our own pace. Here in the UK the big seller is the all inclusive package deal, all you can eat and drink, as long as you're happy...
