Tourist numbers

With the Greek government saying that tourist numbers are up significantly this year, I was somewhat surprised to hear that certain resorts on Rhodes are actually rather quiet for this time of year. What is happening in Crete? Is it quiet, busy or just about normal?

I would love to earn the wages of a top footballer for just a month as I could then retire in comfort with immediate effect. The fact that some of these footballers couldn't scratch their name in the dirt with a stick is of no consequence - they cannot impact on our lives the way the financiers dict...

It appears there is growing evidence of the failure of certain GM crops, as in golden rice etc. But don't let that get in the way of profiteering! These companies have patents on all the seeds and can then dictate food policies and prices for the entire world. greedy bankers - eat your hearts out.

Don't forget that when Fred the shred got hung out to dry there were 200 people at the bank being paid more than he was. They remain unnamed of course because we're not allowed to see who really runs things in transparent Britain. (apologies for deviation from original post )

I try to follow Greek politics fairly regularly, but find it very confusing. Why did the Greeks vote in the same corrupt incompetent bunch of clowns who got them in this mess in the first place? Why do the Greek people seemingly accept with a resigned sigh the next round of tax collections and auste...

I have managed to record the sat nav with some dubious expressions, but now I have to convert the files and then find out if it is possible to post them here?........

Turning slightly would make sense as this tends to happen when approaching a junction when the road ahead runs at an angle. I was wondering if the other term was a case of when words can change, for example after θα να etc. It also seems to precede the word κατ_...

is my sat nav Greek?

In what can only be described as a stunning attempt to enhance my floundering Greek language skills I switched my sat nav to Greek directions, hoping to hone my skills but ending up somewhat confused. I was made to believe (via Pimsleurs/Michel Thomas/PDQ) that straight ahead was ολα ...

We also pay for Salman Rushdie, republican marches, anti war demos and a lot of politically diverse things. Freedom of speech, movement and thoughts may never seem to be expensive, but have to be worth it.

I was under the impression that Greece signed off on this many years ago. Why they now include world war one seems slightly strange, unless they're going to sue Bulgaria as well. All in all the timing seems strange as this will not go down very well with their German paymasters in an election year. ...

Sfakia

In a recent post containing old photos of Crete, many of the loclals seem to be described as Sfakianos. I cannot seem to find anything about this. Was it a style of dress, or pertaining to a particular region of Crete? And does it have anything to do with the abandoned village of Skafidia, on the so...

tending grapevines

Several years ago my wife bought a grapevine. It was essentially a twig with one withered leave. We were told they do not like the outdoors in Scotland due to the winters here. When I planted it, I put a sheet of bubble wrap about six inches above the root ball in an attempt to stave off the frost. ...

Under no account can GD be driven underground - it's what they probably hope and pray for. I find everything about them abhorrent, but defend their right to say it. Free speech is for all, when we change this, we give up everything.
