Sfakia

In a recent post containing old photos of Crete, many of the loclals seem to be described as Sfakianos. I cannot seem to find anything about this. Was it a style of dress, or pertaining to a particular region of Crete? And does it have anything to do with the abandoned village of Skafidia, on the so...

tending grapevines

Several years ago my wife bought a grapevine. It was essentially a twig with one withered leave. We were told they do not like the outdoors in Scotland due to the winters here. When I planted it, I put a sheet of bubble wrap about six inches above the root ball in an attempt to stave off the frost. ...

Under no account can GD be driven underground - it's what they probably hope and pray for. I find everything about them abhorrent, but defend their right to say it. Free speech is for all, when we change this, we give up everything.

Nearly all countries in Europe do charge for the importing of vehicles and Greece isn't that out of the ordinary either. VAT payments, re registering, safety and emission tests all have to be carried out now. I believe that the motor industry has a say in this as the price of a new car may be signif...

I would think that nearly everyone who is living abroad, or working abroad has paid their dues. I worked in the Middle east for 7 years and had to pay my stamp every month to ensure being allowed treatment "back home", if ever needed. If you've paid in most of your working life then you ca...

There is great support generally for the idea of clamping down on fraudsters/cheats/thieves who cost the country untold millions. If the government did this they would be popular. What they are doing is taking from the poorest once again, which is nothing new for the tories. How the liberals ever sl...

I am in no way condoning people rattling around in council houses that they no longer need, but to suggest they just have to give it up and move to who knows where is hardly an ideal solution. When all the council houses were sold off, nothing was built to replace them. In Edinburgh, blocks of counc...

Of course he has a choice, but to charge people without offering a realistic alternative seems at least a little bit off. He is perfectly willing to downsize or swap but is unable to do so. Moving to another town is not always easy, or in fact desirable. Had he wanted to purchase the place he could ...

A guy I used to work with is getting hit with the bedroom tax. a council tenant for over 30 years, his family have now grown up and moved on. He doesn't need a 3 bedroom house. His council have told him they have no 1 bedroom properties, so he can't get one unless he moves to a different town, loses...

Would these earthquake regulations still hold true for a building over a century old? I would fail to see the point in putting an earthquake proof roof on top of walls that were never designed for this purpose, but then I am not a structural engineer.

I know some beams are needed, but I intend to do most of that myself. Are there any laws on what type of roofing material has to be used? I was thinking of maybe using the type of insulated cladding style that is used on some new builds over here.

Roofing costs.

I am thinking about buying a property in southern Crete. The property in question needs lots of work, first of which would be a roof. Parts of the building have a roof, but I think it would probably be quicker and more economical to change the lot. Any ideas on how much this would cost? The size is ...
