Trying to marry the economies of northern Europe with their southern partners was always doomed to failure. Our failure stems from embracing the American "instant gratification" , and pure greed. Greece would have had some problems if they had never joined the Euro as corruption has always...

The ferry sounds like a good idea as I have driven on many goat tracks over the years due to my wife's incredible map reading skills. Remember passing a stuck jimny in a clapped out fiat punto with our daughter throwing up with either dizziness or altitude sickness due to the goat track we climbed. ...

If we all switch to electric cars then we must have nuclear - nothing else could cope with the demand....

It tends to be vertical drops that set it off. I'm fine with, say, castle ramparts where you look over at an angle. If however I climb on the rampart and look straight down, then I tend to fall over. Looking down steep hills is alright, but looking over cliffs is a no no.

Plenty to think about there, thanks for all the info. As I suffer from a form of vertigo, I'll maybe give the coastal path a miss although my wife seems very keen about that bit! I've always wanted to do a gorge or two as we've been to Crete many times but always got sidetracked as there's so much t...

Plakias to Elofonissi

Is it possible to drive along the south coast from Plakias to Elofonissi? I know there will have to be quite a detour round because of Samaria, and where would be a good place to stay over for a couple of nights down that neck of the woods? We haven't visited the south west coast and would like to k...

Re efficiency of wind power. Scottish power released figures today that on the top week last year, wind farms accounted for 70% of domestic electricity in Scotland, and so are going to build another 20 wind farms. Meanwhile it turns out the cost of decommissioning Sellafield now stands at 67.5 billi...

Nowadays the up and coming middle classes can pay extra for more children, and of course running a policy like this will never be perfect given the sheer size of the country, but surely the fact that they actually tried is worth a mention?

Here in Britain, we look across the "pond" with a superior smugness at the role of lobbyists in American politics, but it is exactly what we have all over the world now. everything we read is someones agenda. Trying to sort the wheat from the chaff becomes increasingly complex. The only co...

There's a lot of negative press concerning windfarms, but what else is there? Do we just start building new nuclear reactors everywhere and to hell with the consequences? Wind farms are a temporary, ongoing system, much improved over the past few years. Continued investment will make them better til...
