Re: Let's alter history

Being staunch rugby fans, (all be it Welsh!), I agree with you Bob. You are also correct about people being too easily offended by things. It almost seems ‘fashionable’ these days to object to just about everything. I do however have a ‘bee in my bonnet’ about slavery or bias against black people. W...

Re: Let's alter history

You make a very good point as ever Bob. I thought you might like to read this? It is quite enlightening! I know some might argue that it is just one article, but I have family and friends who live in Bristol, (Not at the toppling of the statue protest I hasten to add!), and Colston’s deeds are well ...

Re: Let's alter history

History is one thing. Erecting statues to people who made money out of selling human beings Is another. Statues are usually there to glorify a person. The removal of the Colston statue had been under discussion for quite a few years. - It has a place in history.....but that place is in a museum. I d...

Re: Damned if you do - damned if you don't

The end of the Triple Lock has already been suggested by economists and journalists alike. I cannot see how it can be sustained, however I am sure many pensioners will not be happy about a reduced income. It will not be a problem for those of us who also have a private pension and income from other ...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

Friends were due to sail from Bari to Patras on the 16th June. They were told they would not know for definite until the 15th. - Not a lot of use if you are in the U.K! They decided to take a chance, and if all else failed they would have a holiday in Italy until they could get on a ship. When they ...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

I had also read the Guardian this morning prior to Cleo’s post. What I took from it was the following..... “We are open to the participation by [non-EU countries], provided they make the request and, secondly, they commit to providing updated and regular information to the website … The UK has not m...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

I see today that two women travelling from the U.K. to N.Z. for a family funeral have tested positive out there. That isn’t going to encourage countries to welcome travellers from the U.K!

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

I watched a head teacher being interviewed yesterday. He said that if social distancing was reduced to one metre In schools it would only mean an extra three children per class in his school. He felt this would be the case in most schools. Iain Duncan Smith has been on the news again today saying th...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

Friends have already had their flight to Athens cancelled at the end of July Guy. They are desperately searching for another one. Other friends are booked on the ferry from Bari to Patras on the 16th of this month. They took the last deck space for their vehicle when they booked, but still won’t kno...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

Yes Warwick, we watch Parliament regularly. - I have seen the green and red symbols on the seats. I have also watched MP’s immediately sitting in places vacated by other members. I mentioned the ‘shoulder to shoulder‘ stance of Johnson, as his daily mantra is to keep 2m distance from other people! A...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

As for getting on a plane, ( with a packed suitcase), forget it for now! Just look at those poor people on the Doha flight. Re your Sharma comment Guy, I am not sure if you watched PM’s Questions on the BBC Parliament programme at lunch time yesterday? When the Speaker announced the short recess, Jo...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

The Government’s approach to children returning to school has always been for it to be optional. - I don’t think they dare do anything else! Yesterday seven members of staff in a primary school in Derby tested positive and had to be sent home. It is noticeable how little publicity there has been abo...
