Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

It is so bad Clio that you could not make it up! The link you posted describes everything perfectly. Thanks for the kind comment earlier by the way. Being ill on Crete would not be a problem for us in the way that it would for Guy. We are the only non Greeks where we are, so surrounded by friends wh...

Re: Any rebates available?

My reaction was based on the fact that someone would even consider they were entitled to money from a government that they probably don’t even pay tax to Mixos and John4d. I would not expect or accept a hand out from a Government, when their own people were struggling so much financially. We make a ...

Re: Any rebates available?

I am speechless...for once! Well said Ros21m.

You are also correct SueA. When on Crete we still have to pay our council tax, telephone line rental, tv contract etc when not in the U.K. I do not expect financial help because I am not using the facilities!

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

By a moral problem, I was thinking more along the lines of someone feeling guilty about possibly taking the virus from the U.K. to Greece. We should have been in Greece since the 16th April. We are desperately missing being out there. I do however have reservations about travelling from a country wh...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

A moral question by you Guy, and an economic response in Chryssyg’s last sentence.

I guess there has to be a balance, however without people, (especially ones well enough to work), there would be no economy. What a disastrous situation the world is in just now.

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

Not sure I agree about the beaches Chrissyg. Did you see the youngsters fighting on the beach at Ogmore by Sea two evenings ago? Three men got stabbed at Bournemouth, (Clever to do that when socially isolating!), and I can’t believe the Council there declared a major incident without reason! - Unfor...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

Remember Chrissyg, that although you feel many UK people are being careful with social distancing and wearing masks, the behaviour of those on UK beaches, and the street ‘raves’ over recent days, (not to mention Liverpool supporters last night), do not portray the U.K. public in a good light. Don’t ...

Re: Let's alter history

I had already read the Guardian article before you posted the link Warwick. - I hope others find the time to read it.

Thanks for the link to the book Guy. I have just ordered it.

Re: Let's alter history

Being staunch rugby fans, (all be it Welsh!), I agree with you Bob. You are also correct about people being too easily offended by things. It almost seems ‘fashionable’ these days to object to just about everything. I do however have a ‘bee in my bonnet’ about slavery or bias against black people. W...

Re: Let's alter history

You make a very good point as ever Bob. I thought you might like to read this? It is quite enlightening! I know some might argue that it is just one article, but I have family and friends who live in Bristol, (Not at the toppling of the statue protest I hasten to add!), and Colston’s deeds are well ...

Re: Let's alter history

History is one thing. Erecting statues to people who made money out of selling human beings Is another. Statues are usually there to glorify a person. The removal of the Colston statue had been under discussion for quite a few years. - It has a place in history.....but that place is in a museum. I d...

Re: Damned if you do - damned if you don't

The end of the Triple Lock has already been suggested by economists and journalists alike. I cannot see how it can be sustained, however I am sure many pensioners will not be happy about a reduced income. It will not be a problem for those of us who also have a private pension and income from other ...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

Friends were due to sail from Bari to Patras on the 16th June. They were told they would not know for definite until the 15th. - Not a lot of use if you are in the U.K! They decided to take a chance, and if all else failed they would have a holiday in Italy until they could get on a ship. When they ...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

I had also read the Guardian this morning prior to Cleo’s post. What I took from it was the following..... “We are open to the participation by [non-EU countries], provided they make the request and, secondly, they commit to providing updated and regular information to the website … The UK has not m...

Re: British hopes of summer holidays abroad quashed!

I see today that two women travelling from the U.K. to N.Z. for a family funeral have tested positive out there. That isn’t going to encourage countries to welcome travellers from the U.K!
