Re: CoronaVirus now confirmed on Crete

From the perspective of the U.K., it looks like Greece has handled this better than many. U.K. has over 1,000 deaths with the prospect of many more - the country wasn’t very good at self isolation and the government was too weak to enforce a strict lockdown early on, despite this being a key message...

Some people won’t have to worry about the great toilet roll panic of 2020.

Re: The final countdown....

From a practical point of view, having a right hand drive car in Crete might be a bit of a pain - you see them on the roads sometimes, but not that often. We have the same make, model and mileage of car in the U.K. and Crete and the U.K. one was much more expensive to buy, as well as having the stee...

Re: School of European Education of Heraklion Admissions

We DO have school age children, and we have experience of living in another country - in our case, Kenya. Schooling was fine in Nairobi, but we couldn’t do this in Crete - our house is a long way from either Heraklion or Chania, where there are international schools. I do know someone whose English ...

Re: Crete Documentary

Ithought this was mightily disappointing and wondered whether I felt this because I knew more about Crete than its (half-Greek) presenter. A much better tv programme on Crete is Simon Reeve’s BBC programme around Greece - he is really good at getting something of the real country - as he is of most ...

Re: East Med Gas Pipeline

This would have a much bigger impact (good or bad) on Crete than the East Med pipeline if it happens.

Re: East Med Gas Pipeline

Not exactly going in the right direction for the environment is it.! That kind of depends. Gas emits less CO2 than oil which emits less than coal. Gas is widely recognised as a transition fuel given the intermittency of renewable alternatives and the lack of battery technology to store energy...

East Med Gas Pipeline

I guess I am not the only one sent this link today, with a comment that the East Med Gas Pipeline will lead to a rise in property prices on Crete. https://hellasjournal.com/2019/12/american-chambers-of-greece-cyprus-and-israel-hail-eastmed-act-signing-by-us-president/ Maybe, but there are a number o...

Re: Property purchase costs involved ?

When we bought our house (20 years ago!) we also paid only one lump sum but we were given a breakdown by the estate agent and lawyer. I was clueless. We had to go to the notary in Chania to sign some statement and when we got there we were taken into what I thought was the reception where a woman be...

The (justified) protests against this change to the pension age will be nothing if Iain’s Duncan Smith gets his way. https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/pension-ageiain-duncan-smith-75_uk_5d5978fce4b0eb875f256f57?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvLnVrLw&guce_referrer_...

Re: Driving

My father said something similar 45 years ago: 'Always assume every other driver on the road is an idiot'. Good advice, as it turned out he was right. Tim Those were the exact words my father used. Unfortunately he forgot to add “and you’re an idiot too”. After 4 weeks in a coma, 2 months in a whee...

Re: Driving

We live down an empty lane on the edge of a quiet village. My daughter started to drive 100 yards down the lane this summer (she’s 14). Our next door neighbour (in the only house near us) said: go to the car park in town - that’s where all our children and grandchildren learned how to drive when the...

Re: UK Food in Supermarkets

If you wait a couple of months, you’ll be able to replicate a U.K. Supermarket easily by renting a shop with shelves that have no foreign products on them. Then you can remind people what a sensible move it was not to live in Post Brexit Britain.
