Re: One toe in the swamp

The best advice we ever had was to get a decent lawyer. As others have also recommended in other posts, we went with Kostas at http://www.propertylaw.gr/ and we have never been disappointed and often delighted by his charm and good sense. He's been our lawyer for 17 years now.

Re: Bicycle Hire in Kalyves area

I really like the bike shop in Kalyves. Nico, who runs it, is always really helpful. We checked prices against those in Chania when we bought bikes this year and there's no difference, though the large shop within Chania to the west of the centre does sell second hand bikes.

Re: Gluten Free Dairy Free

My mother in law has a gluten-free diet and spends three weeks a year in Crete without it being an issue - she's also in Apokoronos mainly when here.

Re: Thought we'd seen the back of him

Athenian democracy in which only the 10-15 % of the population who were property owning male citizens had the right to vote has some obvious attractions, not least of which is that it doesn't run the risk that, as history often shows, the 'will of the people' turns out to be unwise.

Re: Thought we'd seen the back of him

I think one of the problems is that people mostly get their information from the media, including me, and the media only seem able to deal in 10 second sound bites. The information, therefore, tends to be quite simplistic. ..... Every country in the world wants to get inflation increasing because i...

Re: Staying In

Indeed, the majority on this forum very likely are those retiring. It's the big businesses and their skilled workers that the EU is interested in attracting, and they may pitch the final rules such that it is these companies and workers that are covered and not everyone else (including those on this...

Re: Staying In

People retiring to continental Europe are a minor part of this proposal. It's aimed at large corporations and their people who could otherwise not move so easily en masse. It will be connected with lack of access to the single market by UK businesses in an easy form. It's aimed at scooping up Britis...

Re: Staying In

One of the reasons why the EU might offer this without expecting a reciprocal arrangement is that it might tempt the banks and other large corporates (but particularly the banks) into moving to one of the several European cities who have been trying to lure them following the referendum. Much more t...

Re: Round and Round We Go

I voted Remain (for reasons that are too tedious to go in to here) and I wear a poppy: 1. The money goes to the British Legion who do good, much needed work 2. It stops poppy sellers in the street from bothering me (there are many of them this year) 3. I was annoyed with FIFA for telling the English...

Re: Round and Round We Go

The worst thing in these lamentable events is the attack on the judiciary by some newspapers and politicians and the failure of the Lord Chancellor to defend the judiciary beyond a feeble statement. The independence of the judiciary is vital to the protection of citizens' freedom. Any sense of propo...

Re: Cretan Energy

Thank you for the responses - much appreciated.

We have quite a large roof, and it seems crazy not to harvest the sun if we can, either directly or by selling to the grid. It's not to make money, but rather to reduce my alarmingly big carbon footprint.

Cretan Energy

Good afternoon

Has anyone used Cretan Energy to install solar panels? Any views on them or any alternatives for solar panels, not just for hot water, but more full use of electricity.

Thanks

It will make all the expats who are voting to leave the EU feel a bit foolish if the situation you describe does happen.

Re: UK Referendum

Life is too short to wade through opinions on the intracies of the EU and Britain's relationship with Brussels. Here's my simple reasons for voting to stay in: 1. Free trade creates wealth 2. Investment (starting new businesses, opening branches, building factories etc) creates wealth There'll likel...

Re: A Lesson for the Leaders of Europe?

A lesson for us all, not just leaders (who reflect and anticipate the views of their constituents). We are born citizens, not of a country, but of the World, and it's easy to forget that. The story of the Tower of Babel is a timeless cry at our vanity, selfishness and greed.
