Re: Wrought iron gates

Hi Chrissy, the engineer actually had the brochure when we met him. I only told him the bits I wanted to use in the gate with a rough sketch and he took it from there. It is made of steel, about 3.25 mts long and 1.75 mts high. Lightweight solid panels in the lower area with 15mm square 'arrows' goi...

Re: Wrought iron gates

I had mine made by the local welding engineer in Pigi. The various fancy bits and pieces you may wish to have incorporated in it were all available from catalogues he had. It was made within a week and was fitted by him. I was also offered the option of having it made with an electrical opening syst...

Re: Transferwise are now a bank. Or are they?

I too use them having seen the early posts on this site about them and have since recommended them to friends over here. I tend to transfer funds during the year at a minimal level, because of the Greek bank insecurities, but the transfer is charged at such a low rate, about £5 for £1000 it is a bar...

I was told end of August, beginning of September by my accountant on Thursday, there will be no increase apparently.

Re: Safe As Houses?

I doubt that any of us who have second homes in Crete and still maintain UK residences would 'abandon' them in the event of not being able to sell. As Jeff said, mine was bought (off plan in 2004) to live in and enjoy, it has provided so much pleasure to myself and close family over the years. It wi...

Re: Gluten Free Dairy Free

There is a branch of Xalkiadakis (we always called it 'the Spar supermarket') on Eleftherias, the road going to the sea front, by the big roundabout as you come into Rethymnon from the East, on Machiton Scholis Chorofylakis. A large new branch of A and B also opened in the last few months on that ro...

Re: More Questions from the newbies

At the present time with UK/Greece being within the EU you can bring all of your bits and pieces over in a van or car, most I would anticipate would have been owned and used for over six months, but new items, other than vehicles, are not a problem. I would suggest you avoid transit via Switzerland,...

Re: House Insurance

Having been with Intasure for over eight years I finally got fed up with having to haggle over the price for renewals each year and switched to my local branch of Interamerican in Rethymnon. The premium was substantially lower for the same cover so I am happy. A point mentioned by them at the time, ...

Re: Up to date info needed for the Hersonissos / Heraklion Area

Welcome to the forum Mackie Suggest you look at Praktika for Electricals and Mattresses they are close to the airport at Heraklion. If you are prepared to order and wait there is also Ikea who will order and deliver but that takes more time since the goods are shipped from Athens. To get to both, on...

Re: Crete in the Snow!

Just had a photo forwarded of my car parked up with my neighbours near Pigi, Rethymnon...the sun shade covering them is resting on the car roofs, they had 10cms overnight and it was still coming down at 08.30. Here in the frozen North, it was up to 9c at 15.00hrs with few clouds, blue skies and suns...

I and friends have used Voula Gagani for over ten years with no problems. She is based in Rethymnon, a short walk up from the marina, and may be contacted on:

financialteam73atgmail.com

I can provide a contact number by PM if you wish to speak to her.

Re: Lamps on poles

Ikea have 'Rotera' candle lanterns, (they use tea light candles) 2.89€ each, suitable for hanging from a pole. Usually have them in different colours.

Re: Capital Control Issues

As you say Warwick, capital gains tax was introduced on property from 2014, I, potentially, was going to be hit with it if I had sold my house (a second home) in Crete then. Subsequently, it was suspended fairly quickly I seem to remember, and as far as I know that situation remains the same. I woul...

Re: Bonfires

Can anybody confirm the dates on Crete when it is allowed to have bonfires, think its excluded 1st May to 31st October? Certainly these dates in Rethymnon area. I had a problem last year, in May, with a neighbour who had cleared an access road to land directly below my fifteen foot retaining wall a...
