Re: Greek Driving Licence

Just the plastic bit. NB it is worth remembering, too, that the plastic type British licence is only valid for 10 years, so if anyone has gone past that date the procedure is a little different, though not impossible!

Re: New Animal Welfare Law

...and in the meantime, those of us who work hard, alongside the municipalities, to help the strays, will just carry on doing so. This appears to be only "draft" legislation, so who knows what will actually find its way into law.

Re: Uk/Crete Postal Service

In this neck of the woods (Sitia) it seems to take 2-3 days going to the UK, and about a week coming back. The Sitia post office has 2 collections, one at 9.30 and one at 14.00, and it seems that if you catch the early one it helps! This all applies to "normal" post. Registered post to the...

Re: Greek Driving Licence

On point 4 - yes, you do have to have an official translation if you have a plastic licence. Our lawyer did ours and the price certainly wasn't unreasonable.

Re: IKA Renewal Heads Up

Renewed our IKA books in the IKA office in Sitia this morning. No form to fill in, not interested in passports/residence permits. Did my husband's renewal ok - he's the State Pensioner; I'm classed as his "dependant" for IKA. Got our file out and checked our S1 forms; wanted evidence of ta...

Re: Carry-On Counting

Dream on, Mixos! I have no idea where they think they are going. Just amuses me when there is a scramble to get off, everyone is heading towards the front and they suddenly realise that the door at the back is open.

Re: Carry-On Counting

Same at Heathrow.

Hand baggage of correct dimensions was weighed - just got under the 8kg limit! They seemed to be being pretty strict about it, though there was the usual scrum at the gate and I'm sure some people got away with it.

Yes, felt it here as well, though as Mixos said, only one tremor in this area.

Re: Wasps still around

I agree, though they do seem to be slowly dying, as I keep finding dead ones. Wish they would go away - large bluebottle type flies ditto. We've never known so many flies this late in the year - October is normally the bad month, but they just go on and on.

Nothing whatever, apart from the fact that it is too far for those of us living at the other end of the island. Having an event like this more or less in the centre would have been more appropriate and given an equal chance for everyone to attend.

Re: Meet the Britsh Ambassador, Chania

I agree, @alansmithnl, - especially what she has to say about the potential effect of Brexit on our lives here. A pity that the Embassy staff didn't stop to consider that British people in Crete live elsewhere than in Chania! An event of this type should have been held in Heraklion, to give the grea...

Re: Organ donation in Greece

In the UK the donation is not used on NHS patients until the sample test comes back clean, so if the Greeks use the same precautions (let's hope they do) I don't see why they need a blanket ban. This is timely, as I've been making enquiries about donating blood here - looks as if I can save myself ...

Can't help with accountants, as I'm in the wrong area, but highly recommend Nomad for removals. Excellent service at both ends of the operation.

Re: Rats

These are the killing kind, Margarita. We sometimes catch tiny live mice in them - they get a second chance and are released well away from the house. We tried humane traps originally - totally useless. These are the only method I will use. Those mentioned above are abhorrent to me.

Re: Rats

We've had success with the large plastic rat traps (from Stivaktakis agricultural shop, or Manos next to the traffic lights in Sitia), baited with crunchy peanut butter. I will absolutely not use poison - not only because of the danger to our dogs, but in order not to have poisoned rats entering the...
